Bit the bullet and decided to upgrade from windows 8.1 pro to windows 10 pro on my zenbook pro ux501.

Should I expect any issues?

Also If I'm correct I can upgrade from win 8.1 pro -> win 10 pro preview -> win 10 pro right?

OP:

TL;DR; Your mileage may vary - I hope you made full backup or don't mind possibly having to re-install

Because they're curious and want to be a part of the preview process, submit feedback, send telemetry data and error reports, etc, etc, etc? Some of us have more than one device and like to play with stuff.

I don't understand why people still upgrade Windows vs fresh installs.  I would have figured anyone that actually works with PC's on a regular basis knows that upgrades have ALWAYS caused issues, and STILL do even with 7 -> 10 and 8.1 -> 10.

Hmm you do realize an upgrade is basically a clean install, it's been this way for a long time now. The upgrade process moves out your personal files/apps/settings, installs a fresh copy of the OS, then moves it back. It's not like it used to be.

So if you have problems after an upgrade from a RTM to another RTM you will likely see the same issue on a clean install once you install the offending device driver/app that was causing the problem in the upgrade install.

While I would still say full fresh install is likely always better, for the most part upgrades are not a problem like they used to be.

Upgrade went well for most parts , pc restarted multiple times during progress.

At the last restart it said suddenly: "Restoring to previous version of windows..."

And now I'm back at windows 8.1 D: ???!!

Anyone can tell me what the heck happend?

How much space is free on C:?

Run a Disk Cleanup prior to trying again, run a CHKDSK /F prior to trying again. Also, uninstall any software that may have any type of device/network adapters, like VPN Clients, VMWare, etc. Then try it again.

176gb free of 222gb

I'll run checkdisk to make sure my system files are original non modified.

Haven't got vm ware or any other network driver adapter sort of software installed :/

We would need some more information about the setup: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824819.aspx If you can get those to us, we might be able to see where it went wrong. You will want to pull up the log and look for any errors/warnings/criticals

Logs didn't show any clues and the upgrade failed after a 3th attempt again...

So I went and did a clean install, currently installing drivers and programs, I recommend chrome beta since the stable version is very laggy with my uhd screen.

Well it is still a pre-release OS so yes you are gonna get problems. Why didn't you just wait 3 weeks and install the released version?

Not speaking for him but why not use 10162 now, it's stable, plus he can just do a upgrade to RTM, or if he wants choose to install fresh during the setup in RTM.

Since the actual release will probably be a staged rollout, which means I can maybe add 4 more weeks to those 3 weeks...

Besides that I went crazy from the laggy user experience on my 4k screen, windows 10 is way smoother now ^^

Naa it might roll out over a period of 3-5 days at the most.
