Before you try El Capitan and you have a spare USB hdd lying around at least as big as your boot hdd. Or is bigger then the amount you are using. It might be worth using Carbon Copy Cloner to make a complete clone of your drive. That way if the beta causes loads of problem you can just clone back.

No need to use CCC, disk utility will do the job just fine .

Or in my case, VMWare snapshots It works well, but inside a folder, or DMG if set to Icon view, nothing shows, I have to put it in List view.

Or don't update a prod level OS to a beta one at all.  That is why they make vmware, parallels, and virtualbox.  Or you can partition your hard drive and install OX 10.11 on the second partition...that way you don't mess with 10.10.
