Until Dawn new previews and gameplay

Recommended Posts

*Until Dawn is designed to be replayed multiple times as players will not be able to understand the full version with only just one playthrough. Each playthrough will last about nine hours in length and the game mechanics will utilize a new in-game system called the "Butterfly Effect" in which any choice of action by the player may cause major unforeseen consequences later on. Throughout the game players will make difficult decisions during ethical or moral dilemmas such as to sacrifice one character in order to save another as one example. The "Butterfly Effect" system blurs the line between right and wrong decisions and it is possible for players to keep all eight characters alive through to having them all killed, allowing for many different paths and scenarios players can take and seemingly endless multiple endings. Until Dawn will have a strict auto-save system to prevent players from reloading a previous save file to an earlier point in the game if they regret an in-game decision that they have made.[1][5]

Color me interested... Even though I don't own a PS4

I am hoping this is the first next generation game I can actually get my wife to join me. She is not a gamer at all, she played some SNES and N64 growing up with her younger brother but that is the extent of it. So we shall see.
I am real curious about this game though. I love horror flicks, so if they can capture the feeling of starring in a B horror flick, that is awesome.
I am just renting the game however, at least initially. My interest is not confident enough in it to commit to a purchase.

Game studio out of Guildford making a cheesy american teen slasher game... sold.

I got to speak to the devs at Eurogamer last year, nice guys. We had a fairly lengthy chat about making the game scary, as at the time it was still thought to be more cheesy. They seemed more than happy to take what I was saying on-board. I was hitting home about how crap Silent Hill had gone :p

Only watched a little of the video on IGN above as I do not want to ruin anything, and I usually do not say stuff like this as I have enjoyed plenty of games that are not known to be powerhouses with performance, The Evil Within being one of them, but the game looked real, real choppy in a lot of places. And I feel like a game where one watches it for a decent amount of the time, the choppiness would just really stand out. Hopefully it was just the crap IGN player. As I could see that breaking the immersion. And not kidding, I was just thinking about preordering the game since it comes out next week, but once again I am sticking to just renting it now. Damn.

20-minute gameplay video (with annoying commentary).

Looks basically like if Telltale Games got Quantic Dream to redo their graphics engine, then did a game based on every single 80's teen slasher film ever using old-school Resident Evil controls and animations.

My pre-guess is 7.0 - 7.5.

edit: looks like there's a cool QTE-ish mechanic using the lightbar to build tension.  Actually, more of a reverse QTE -- in tense moments, you can't move the controller.  Skip to about 10 minutes in.

Btw, the psych profile thing didn't originate in Shattered Memories, the first I saw it was in the Martian Dreams character creation, which in itself was just a variation of the tarot card character creation in the other games of the Ultima series.

I personally don't like QTE type games, even with multiple choices, its just basically a modern version of a choose-your-own-adventure book.

Looks like UD is reviewing well so far.

I just might pick this up... not day one, but I'll give it a try eventually...

I actually enjoyed games similar to this (Heavy Rain), so why not.

Until Dawn is everything that Quantic Dream games have tried to be – unsuccessfully – for the past decade. It emulates horror movies while demonstrating a clear understanding of what makes those movies work, its focus on consequence is nervewracking and intricate, and its story is silly but strongly delivered. It’s the best David Cage game not made by David Cage, and it’s the best interactive horror flick you’ll play.

The only downside is there’s not a token pothead. Supermassive Games needs to do a bit more genre research.

9.5/10
Superb

A lot better than expected. Still a polarizing game though, if you don't like the way Heavy Rain/Beyond play, then I doubt this no matter the score will do it for you. Really happy it's got some genuine scares, and as for gameplay I love Quantic Dream titles.

Here's about 15 minutes of mostly spoiler-free game play.

Full review coming later this week after I finish it.  So far I would say this is a great mix of Heavy Rain and old-school Resident Evil or maybe Silent Hill.  The section I play JUST before what's in the video was amazing, so well-paced.  If this doesn't fall off the ledge, I'll call it a Buy or maybe Buy Later if the $60 price tag worries you.  Much better than I was expecting.

Nice! Picking this up at the weekend. MGS5 coming tomorrow, eek. Damn postman should have delivered today #royalfail. Had to catch up on some GZ evacs anyway.

Okay, just finished the game.
I was on Chapter 3 and was not sure if I was feeling it.
Damn, I was dead wrong.

No hyperbole here, as far as this type of game, it is pretty much the best I ever played. For the "choose your own adventure" genre of video game, it does not get much better.

So yeah, I do think I got about the worse possible ending one could get. LOL

I only had 2 survivors, Chris and Sam. Up until I blew the rest of the group up in the house, I only lost 2 people, Matt and Jessica (and Jessica was not until towards the end of the game)

Pretty much probably at the very least have to replay that final chapter.

For this genre though, the game was damn near perfect. I am just left really, really impressed with the execution. I also loved the story, something I can pretty much say I almost never like in video games.

Great experience. It really and truly is.

Great to hear this! Always trusted your opinions Larry. Too hooked on MGS5 for now though lol.

    • RevPDF 4.5.0 by Razvan Serea RevPDF is a free, fully offline PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets you edit text and images directly inside PDF files — no internet connection, no account, and no cloud uploads required. Unlike bloated alternatives that demand subscriptions and constant connectivity, RevPDF fits in under 60MB on desktop while delivering a complete editing toolkit: annotate, redact, sign, compress, split, merge, convert, and reorganize pages, all processed locally on your device. Smart font matching ensures edited text blends seamlessly with the original, and multi-language support includes RTL scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Where most PDF editors force you to choose between features and simplicity, RevPDF manages both. You can build interactive forms from scratch with text fields, checkboxes, and dropdowns, permanently redact sensitive data before sharing, draw freehand on contracts and diagrams, and add custom watermarks — all without a single file leaving your machine. Edit Text and Images Directly Inside PDFs RevPDF supports true inline PDF editing — not just annotation layers on top of a document, but actual modification of existing text and images within the file. A smart font-matching engine identifies the font used in the original document and applies it automatically when you make edits, so changes blend naturally with the surrounding content. You can reposition elements, resize images, and update text across single pages or entire documents. RevPDF 4.5.0 release notes: This is one of the biggest updates to RevPDF yet. A lot of things people have been asking for are finally here. New Features Auto Redaction Permanently redact sensitive text and areas from your PDFs before sharing. Clean, irreversible, and fully offline. Comments, Links & Bookmarks Add comments for review, insert clickable links, and create bookmarks to jump around long documents without scrolling forever. Find & Replace Search across the whole document and replace text in one go. Long overdue. Split Pages Vertically or Horizontally Split any page down the middle, vertically or horizontally. Perfect for scanned books or double-page spreads. New Drawing Tools More tools for freehand drawing and markup, better for annotations, sketches, and detailed notes. Continuous Scrolling in Editor The editor now scrolls continuously through pages instead of jumping between them. Working through long documents is a lot smoother now. PDF Metadata Editor View and edit the metadata stored inside your PDFs, including title, author, subject, and keywords. Better Font Matching Text edits now blend in more naturally by doing a better job of matching the original font. Tabbed PDF Viewer Open multiple PDFs at once in tabs and switch between them without going back to the home screen. Add Links Insert hyperlinks anywhere in your PDF, to external URLs or to other pages within the document. Share & Print Shortcuts Share or print directly from the editing screen, home screen, and viewer. No extra steps. Minor Updates Paste images directly from clipboard into your PDF New image editing tools for more control over images inside documents Bug Fixes Fixed file saving issues on Windows and Linux Everything still works fully offline. No login, no cloud, no account. Your files stay on your device. • Interesting. I'm not using a VPN with my phone. I tried though my home internet (Rogers) and my cellular internet (Telus) and both trigger the dialog above.
