Man shot and killed with arrow in Kitchener

Recommended Posts

As Monday afternoon gave way to Monday night, police had yet to make any arrests in connection with the death of a 60-year-old man allegedly shot with an arrow in Kitchener’s north end.

Additionally, they warned members of the public to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings as “the risk to public safety is not yet known” in the aftermath of the man’s death.

Waterloo Regional Police were called to the home at 387 Margaret Avenue, across from the entrance to Breithaupt Park, around 7 a.m.

A neighbour or passerby had called 911 after spotting the wounded man on the front lawn of the property.

He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries, and pronounced dead later in the morning.

He was identified later in the day as Michael F. Gibbon.

A person living in the area told CTV News that he saw somebody taken out of 387 Margaret Avenue in a stretcher.

The man “seemed to be awake” and was holding a paramedic’s hand, but the neighbour had no idea what had happened before the emergency vehicles arrived.

“We didn’t hear any noises or anything like that. It was all pretty quiet,” Blair Wendell said.

Police did not say where the arrow came from, or if any specific suspects had been identified.

They did say that they consider the man’s death to be suspicious – though not directly related to 387 Margaret Avenue – and want to hear from anyone with information relevant to the investigation.

“If you happen to identity someone walking around in the City of Kitchener with an arrow or a bow, we would hope that you call police,” Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner told reporters.

Homicide detectives and other officers remained at the scene for the rest of the day. By mid-afternoon, police cruisers blocked other vehicles from accessing a section of Margaret Avenue.

Police also spent time searching the park, but it was not clear for what purpose or if anything was found.

A house on nearby Guelph Street was also blocked off by police, as investigators took photographs and removed evidence from the home. Haffner said he did not know if that action was connected to the investigation on Margaret.

About a dozen schools were placed in hold-and-secure situations – less serious than a lockdown, but severe enough that nobody was allowed into or out of the buildings – for much of the day.

Normal operations resumed at all those schools before the end of the instructional day.

It was not clear why the hold-and-secures were lifted, or why they extended as far as Kitchener’s civic district, where Suddaby Public School was among the facilities affected.

We need to have bow and arrow laws because apparently it is too easy to get a hold of them. If it were harder for the shooter to get a bow and arrow, then crimes like this would never happen!

Funny how I don't recall any mass killers using bows and arrows.

Whoa man, wrong country. Us Canadians take a calm and measured approach to tragedies such as this. By which I mean we collectively say "That sucks. Man, you wanna hit up Timmies?" and promptly forget about it. It's a policy that's served us well!

EDIT: But a bow and arrow though, really? Normally, I'd say "look for the really shifty guy who owns a weapon like that" but honestly... when's the last time you've seen a non-shady person with a bow and arrow?

If we were more like Canada our country would certainly be prettier ;P.

If you aren't at an archery range or hunting the in the woods, I'd keep an eye on somebody with a bow and arrow more than somebody open carrying a handgun (rifle is different).

The last time I was in line at Meijers or most other department stores in the archery department. Also, the other day when the entire family went to our municipal archery range at a public park. Bow deer season just opened and people will be about with longbows, recurve bows, compound bows and crossbows for the next 3 months. I learned to shoot a hunting now before I was 10, and our kids had compounds by that age. Michigan culture.

    • Microsoft's fast coding model MAI-Code-1-Flash comes to Copilot Business and Enterprise by Karthik Mudaliar Microsoft’s recently announced MAI-Code-1-Flash model is now generally available to GitHub Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers. With this support, organizations can have more centralized policy controls and billing while finally being able to use Microsoft’s lightweight, first-party coding model. According to GitHub’s announcement, Business and Enterprise plan administrators must enable the MAI-Code-1-Flash policy in Copilot settings before developers can access the model. Microsoft says that MAI-Code-1-Flash is for fast, iterative coding work rather than the most demanding architectural or debugging tasks. GitHub’s official model comparison page says that the model is great for "general-purpose coding and writing," while it excels at fast, accurate code completions and explanations Microsoft introduced MAI-Code-1-Flash on June 2 as part of a broader collection of internally developed MAI models. GitHub subsequently expanded support to Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, GitHub.com chat, GitHub Mobile, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode, but said support for managed Business and Enterprise customers was still on the way. In Microsoft’s own benchmark testing, MAI-Code-1-Flash scored 51.2% on SWE-Bench Pro, compared with 35.2% for Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 4.5. Microsoft also claimed that the model used up to 60% fewer tokens on SWE-Bench Verified. Do note that these are vendor-run results rather than independent measurements. The model is billed at provider list pricing under GitHub’s usage-based system. GitHub currently lists MAI-Code-1-Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens, $0.075 per million cached input tokens, and $4.50 per million output tokens. For organizations, the main incentive to use MAI-Code-1-Flash is likely to be efficiency rather than maximum capability. A smaller model that responds quickly and limits unnecessary output is quite useful for repetitive agent tasks at scale, especially after GitHub Copilot’s move toward usage-based billing. The "Flash" model is recommended for fast work and not necessarily for huge repositories with loads of context. It's better if teams compare their output with other larger models, especially if they're working on security-sensitive changes and complex, multi-file work.
    • yes AND no the "original" or plain/normal Optiplex 7010 won't be getting any more new firmware updates BUT the Optiplex SFF/SFF Plus {small form factor}, Micro/Micro Plus & Tower/Tower Plus 7010 editions DO get new updates such as this new one   and here are similar guides from the Dell web site for Dell systems: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000390990/secure-boot-transition-faq https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000347876/microsoft-2011-secure-boot-certificate-expiration
