Update for Windows Live Essentials Mail 2012 (KB3093594)

Question

I received a notification of the KB3093594 update for Windows Live Mail, to continue allowing WLM to be used, however some around the web are reporting the update effectively kills WLM ... anyone on Neowin installed it (on Win 7) and if so is your WLM still working ?

The message from MS read: "Dear user, In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, @hotmail, @live or @msn email account. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use. In order to continue using Windows Live Mail 2012 to send and receive email for your account, you need to install the latest update ..."

I can't fully test it, but the build number for a new clean install of Windows Live Mail is "Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3528.0331)"

After installing the KB Update, it's bumped up to "Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3563.0918)"

I was then able to sign in to my Microsoft Outlook (non-work) e-mail account.

When the alternative is the laughably garbage Mail app, WLM will continue to enjoy great popularity.

Thanks for replying & testing it out, I'll wait a few days to see how this works out for others then go ahead and install ..

WLM is the only half decent free alternative to Outlook that I have found.

I found that when I applied the patch I lost all of the folders I had created under my Inbox. If I logged into Outlook.com they were all still there so I waited for some sort of synchronisation to restore them. Didn't happen.

I uninstalled WLM (as the KB udate is not listed seperately in Add/Remove Programs (show Windows Updates enabled)). But problem was the same.

I then renamed the WLM folder in C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail to Windows Live Mailold.

Launched WLM and as expected it showed no emails at all. I set up the account and it connected and pulled in all of the mails and the missing folders.

All working OK now but that is without the patch. I assume that if I apply it I will be back with the same problem again!

Not happy to have wasted all that time and, according to the Microsoft email, I will HAVE to apply the patch or WLM will not work soon.

    • I'm not aware of this issue, but to help the other guys.  What version of Android are you using? Did you try a different browser? To see if Edge is the issue here.
    • I agree when are you going to read this (really poor BTW) article? Here is a better article so you actually know what is going on and answers questions you had in other comments --> https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/05/speed-boosting-low-latency-profile-is-one-of-the-improvements-coming-to-windows-11/ It is unclear if one will be able to disable the new profile at this point but I am not seeing any reason why one would.
    • I disagree; they come off very "bitchy" and "whiny". Make a great product and combine that with a great price (free) and people will come over to your side. Or build it and they will come as they say. Constantly trying to get attention by complaining all the time, will turn people off to your product.
    • It use to be a nightmare, with LibreOffice supporting a newer draft ODF standard by default, and Microsoft Office supporting the older non-draft standard. Now that they both support the same version of ODF, they should be interoperable.
