+Steve B Subscriber² Posted January 12, 2016 Subscriber² Share Posted January 12, 2016 My optical drive only partially works. It will work with CDs but not DVDs anymore. I had tried using a Apple SuperDrive at one point to do a Windows (Bootcamp) install but even with the superdrive plugged in, it wouldn't go. It looks like it kept trying to read from the internal optical drive that's broke and not the USB one that is plugged in. Is there any way around this or is a repair my only option? #Michael
So replacing the drive is definitely doable. It requires a fair amount of skill and the willingness to take off the screen. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2429+Optical+Drive+Replacement/7583
+Steve B Subscriber² Posted January 13, 2016 Author Subscriber² Share Posted January 13, 2016 I wouldn't be doing it myself. I was trying to find out whether there's a way to get an external SuperDrive to work for what I need it to do or is taking it in for repair the other option (other than doing it myself, lol).
