Host File - Redirect Image

I'm currently working on a vBulletin site, and I'm wanting to test it with our new status icons, but making the change will cause our current main theme to change with it due to me working off the current theme for the new theme.  Is there a quick way that I can get the new status icons on the new test site without affecting the current one?

It's probably possible in VB, but I have no idea.  If not, am I able to achieve this with my hosts file?

where are you img files served from? host file is only going to work if your images are stored on their own fqdn where you could change this to new IP on your machine to grab the different images.
