Hi Neowinians,

I have bought a new laptop with Windows 10 and have an old WIndows Vista laptop that I wish to transfer my files from, How do I go about doing this over the wireless network in my home? I've tried searching online but it's left me clueless :/

Thank You for any help guys (Y)

you could setup a homegroup and share the folders you want, or just skip homegroups all together and do a network shared drive.

^ This ...

Or you can flip the laptops over and open the HDD doors and take the old HDD and place it in the new laptop as a slave as long as you have the extra HDD space in the laptop.  If not, if you have DVD player, take it out and mount HDD in it.

There are some tutorials on YouTube/Google.

You can also try out using the homegroup feature of windows , it is very simple and can beset up in minutes.

If don't know how to create homegroup you try EaseUS Todo PCTrans Free will move files between two PCs, two systems with or without network.

Create a folder in win10.. Call it whatever then in vista go to start/run type shell:sendto create a new shortcut and select the folder you created

And then right mouse on the file/s / send to menu option / the folder in vista

Thats what I do here. Never had a prob copying files between the 3 pcs here over the wireless

usb.....windows easy transfer...or hell, use a linux livecd......save money.....don't spend a dime, as it's simple...

HomeGroup is not part of Windows Vista, so it will not really be easy to access files this way, though it is reportedly possible. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/how-do-i-make-windows-7-homegroup-content-accessible-to-vista-and-xp/

then do it manually, by hand...you can't go wrong. Everybody wants a one button solution, but sometimes you have to get your hands dirty......or lose something. I've lost several terabytes of data......it sucks at first, but it becomes nothing as you progress....then you move on.....

I did not say otherwise. My only point was that I do not believe that Windows Easy Transfer is an option.

    • Apart from Early Hiccups on Windows 11 on first install on October 6th 2021 on my old Intel 10700 daily use Desktop PC at the time, used to have issue with Bluetooth suddenly no longer working and only fix back then was always another clean install--then would work for a while. Transition to 2024 when i decided to finally upgrade that system for better support for Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 6 later on, opted for next daily use Gaming Desktop AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and Radeon 7800XT OC 16GB. No major problems at all with this desktop, OS was clean installed way back on 10/8/2025 not long after 25H2 released. Overall i've been happy with Windows 11 Pro from the start, even minor little quirks didn't sway me. Heck i even use Windows 8 and upgraded immediately upon release back then on my old HP P6-2133W Desktop, and while the specs of that machine didn't give me top notch performance--i still was able to do what i wanted to, without too many slowdowns. Windows ME i didn't use on any of my personal systems back in the day, kept those systems on 98SE til XP released, and grabbed that immediately on release date. Kept XP til Vista Released then upgraded immediately, kept Vista til Windows 7 released, then updated immediately again
    • Broadcom: dreadful company who is destroying VMware by pricing it out of the market.
    • To be fair, it wasn't going anywhere. Even when Windows Phone could run Android APKs, Google didn't want any of it so it'd never work and the same thing happened with Windows. It was never about the store or it's users, it was always the developers and who they aligned to.
    • Wake me up when this comes to PC. Until then... zzzzzzzz....
