E3 2016 Microsoft Press Conference Discussion

It hasn't been talked about much but the new controllers that come with the S having Bluetooth is a nice bonus, so not only do you get cross-play/buy and the ability to jump between devices, but now you can use the same controller, as long as you have Bluetooth that is.

That's cool gonna buy one for my PC when my 360 controller dongle will die.

wait, what happened to the streaming devices? lol

Yeah, maybe they're holding off for Gamescom?  I hear that they're not talking about all the software side stuff either.

I saw a few people saying that the Xbox One S is DOA, but don't forgot it's going to be a big investment. To make the most of it you're going to need probably a new TV (4K/HDR), new console and possibly a VR headset (if you wanna go all in). All of that kit is not going to be cheap.

Whilst the idea of a new console is great, I don't, currently, have the space or need to buy a 4K TV. Unless there's another compelling reason. I'll be sticking with my One.

The idea of VR may tempt me, but I'll have to see how that pans out. I've been foolish twice already with the Kinect, whilst great lost support fairly quickly.

Even at 6TFLOPs 60FPS at 4K will be a challenge.

The best thing about Scorpio would be a great looking game at a locked 1080/60 to be honest. Not 4k at 30FPS or 4K at an unlocked 60FPS. People underestimate how tough it is to push 4K in a game.

Or even a slightly higher res downsampled to 1080p.

No doubt, just taking the words from the conf "true 4K gaming" ;) I'd be surprised if they're able to hit that kinda fidelity but we'll see.

Buzzword for now.  Indie stuff hitting 4k/60? Yeah sure. AAA games depending on scope however will be a test. Just look at PC gaming for evidence.

Depends how optimized you can get it and the type of game.   At 6teraflops and that 320GB/s bandwidth, if those hold true, we're looking at better than a Geforce 1070.    If you look at some 1070 benchmarks, though the highest resolution I've seen tested is 3840x2160, not the higher of the two "4k" standards it's still 4k, and what we're looking at when gaming.  The Geforce 1070 can run a game like Witcher 3 at max settings around ~40fps,  it wouldn't take much at that point to tweak some settings/levels from "ultra" to "high" and hit 60fps.

This is just a rough example, the 1070 is around the same level teraflops wise but it's got a slower memory speed, either way, we're a year+ out, anything can happen, and we have no idea about the CPU side of things either.   I think it's possible to do 4k gaming on it, maybe not looking as equal to 4k on the PC but pretty close once developers fully optimize and do what they do with consoles.

I am finally looking to get back into gaming again come this fall so Xbox One S is what I will go with. I wonder how many 360 users like me are out there who are just looking into getting one this year.

I'll put money on Turn10 and Forza 7 being a launch title achieving it if Microsoft say its capable of 4K :)

Just finished work and watching a repeat of the show! E3 mains are on at 2am in Australia and with work at 5am it makes it a bit unwatchable.

Completely blown away by Forza Horizon!! GOTY and that's only having watched the trailer. I've driven all the roads shown and never seen anything like it. Finally a free world racing game in Australia. Never thought I would see the day. I've already pre-ordered the Ultimate edition ($140AU) and I've never pre-ordered a game in my life. I don't even like to think about the amount of money I would lay down to play this but. Incredible.

I didn't think Microsoft would go as crazy with information and showing of the Scorpio as they did at all maybe only a mention when it came out Sony had pulled the Neo from showing. Must be incredibly confident Sony can't match at such short notice and already have their parts locked in with the release this year or confident they can beat it again if they do. Will be interesting to see them return serve now.

4K gaming out of the box, will be day one purchase for me.

DR4

State Of Decay

Gears 4

Sea of Thieves will all be purchases, hopefully I've sunk enough time into Forza when these have released. One of the best line-ups I've seen. Off to watch the Sony event now.

Edit - Some game play.

Not very good that they're already confusing the message with regards to Scorpio exclusives! So much for "No one is left behind"

May not have been to clear in the conference but Aaron Greenberg made it clear that games will be made for both Scorpio and the One. The only option is if they take full advantage of Scorpio.

It definitely wasn't clear, because Greenberg didn't set foot on the stage :p Shannon Loftis is confusing their message, as seen on YT.

Yep Greenberg was post conference. Loftis needs to learn the facts :p

They cannot afford to slip back to 2013's confusion, so I hope there are no nasty surprises when we are closer to launch.

    • Ladybird Browser is no longer accepting outside contributions thanks to AI by David Uzondu The Ladybird Browser Project has announced it will no longer accept public pull requests and will limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it works towards its first alpha release. According to Ladybird's creator Andreas Kling, this is "not a change we make lightly," but the rapid shift in AI capabilities forced their hand. Previously, a massive PR implied that the person behind it put a lot of care into the code and is ready to "answer for the consequences." Now with AI, anyone can generate a PR without even understanding the bug fix or feature they want merged. The blog post goes on to say that the team is closing all open public pull requests immediately, and that maintainers will not treat external forks as a review queue for upstream Ladybird. Instead, the team wants outside contributors to focus on reporting bugs and running tests. Kling started Ladybird back in 2019 as LibHTML, a simple HTML viewer for his hobby operating system, SerenityOS, but by September 2022, it had turned into a full-fledged browser project. What sets Ladybird apart from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox is its totally independent engine, which does not rely on pre-existing codebases. The project maintains a strict policy against default search engine deals or user data monetization, keeping development funded entirely by donations and sponsorships. Generative AI is forcing open source project maintainers to rethink how they handle public code contributions (and the whole open-source thing in general). One month ago, a leak about the National Health Service (NHS) suggested the organization was planning to take all of its public repositories private ahead of a May 11 deadline, thanks to Mythos (an AI model that Anthropic believes is too dangerous to be released to the public) and its ability to find and write exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Government Digital Service (GDS) issued a counter-report titled "AI, open code and vulnerability risk in the public sector" that stopped the shutdown by pointing out that hiding code does not improve security.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
