Eidos Montreal's follow-up to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution is to introduce an all-new challenge mode, featuring self-contained levels, leaderboards and booster packs which can be bought via microtransactions.

 

Dubbed Breach, it's being developed by a team within Eidos Montreal who will be supporting the mode after Deus Ex: Mankind Divided comes out this August, with new maps and weapons due to release for free.

 

"We've been wanting to give something on top of the main game for a while," Fleur Marty, producer on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided told Eurogamer. "We've been thinking what kind of experience we could offer the players. We thought that, with all the systems, the core pillars of Deus Ex, if you could forget for the minute the credible set-ups that are heavy on level design, if you could just take the systems and put them in little bite-sized abstract levels and have fun with them, it could be something."

^ Microtransactions were very much a thing when DE:HR came out. However, Jim Sterling has touched on the change in business strat that Square are following, which is again confirmed by this news.

I didn't say otherwise.  Honestly, I think that Eidos Montreal resisted as long as it could; however, microtransactioning in general HAS gotten to be a trend.  Still, as long as you can NOT use it, it need not be a gripeworthy offense - which is why I mentioned social gaming (where microtransactions are the most rife).

Won't be purchasing this game anymore. All interest lost.

 

After the whole pre order thing and a game mode no one wanted or asked for with micro transactions it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. 

 

It won't make a difference but I consider this voting with my wallet.

So you have no interest in Challenge Mode - or no interest in microtransactions?

 

I'm no fan of microtransactions, either - in fact, I don't use them.

 

However, I have to be honest - even as prevalent as they are, they are still optional (not a requirement) in every game I have seen that has them.

 

If they became mandatory, I'd see things differently - however, that hasn't happened yet - and I doubt that it will.  (It sure hasn't happened on Android - which has more games that are free compared to Windows and Steam put together.)

Really? That's rather petty to be honest.

 

If they were filling the game proper with distracting microtransactions, sure - but over what seems to be an optional addon mode? Who cares.

I care, for one. It's just the principle of the thing. I don't mind the optional game mode but micro transactions should play no part in a competitive game mode unless they are strictly cosmetic. Which is why I'm okay with them in Overwatch.

 

I'm interested in Battlefield 1 as well, but if there are micro transactions in that game that aren't cosmetic then I probably won't buy it, either.

 

That being said I might buy a GoTY edition down the road when it's on sale.

Competitive game modes appeal to me but not when there are micro transactions that will specifically give boosts. I'm just tired of seeing micro transaction infest games, is what it comes down to and I don't want to support it anymore.

I loved the first one and I'll be getting this one because I still expect a strong single player game and a good load of missions to fill up my time, as long as micro transactions are off in MP or some other mode and are optional then I don't much care, I'm old school and still play games for good narrative driven single player.

If Battlefield 1 came with no micro-transactions at all, but EA bundled every copy with a free mobile game that had micro-transactions, would you buy it?

Since the mobile game is, well, mobile, and would have nothing to do with BF1 then yes. That of course assumes the game is good. Pre ordering is something else I don't do anymore either.

If people don't want microtransations in their games that much then just don't use them?  I mean all you have to do is talk with your money,  but in that case, you can buy the game, play the SP and play MP and not use the mt system and they'll know.  If gamers are playing but not paying, so to say, then it'll be clear to them that it's a system gamers don't want.

 

It's the same with this new episodic model, if people don't buy the episodes and just buy the full complete game when it's done, it's a clear message to the developers that the market doesn't want episodic games.   BUT if gamers just don't flat out buy the games then that's NOT the message the developers get.  All the developers see is that people don't buy the game so the game is bad, no more of x game is made, not that the issue was with microtransactions specifically.    I don't think we want developers going out of business, just to make games good and the way we want them.   So in the end buying the games is good, keeps the developers alive and making more games, but you can voice your opinion online about what you don't like and in the case of MT, just don't use it!

That's exactly how I view this new mode in Deux Ex. it is completely inconsequential to my interest in the game, considering I was willing to pay the same price for the game without said mode... if that makes sense.

But if the micro transactions are things that directly affect game play they are a lot harder to ignore. In the case of this game they said they would be booster packs, which means they will affect game play to some extent. So that means someone who does not pay is at a disadvantage.

But that's not in the main game section and it's not in a multiplayer type game either, right?  Isn't this new mode just you playing through levels on your own to complete basic objectives and see who can do it better/faster between friends?  It's not like a MP level where you're playing directly vs other people and you can gain an advantage, if it was then sure, I'd find more issue with it.   As far as this game goes though, like I said in my first post, I'll be playing for the single player and will probably never bother with any MP/Online type modes.

Breach isn't like Overwatch, it's not a PvP game. It might be "competitive" via leaderboards but everything I've read thus far points towards it being PvE.

 

I don't care for Breach either, but I'm not going to let some forgettable addon mode tarnish the actual game itself.

I don't use them, but I'm sure as hell going to bitch about them. Cancer in the industry.

War Commander is, in fact, a rather straightforward example - microtransactions all over the place.  However, anything you can get via microtrans you can earn via regular gameplay; in fact, some items can ONLY be earned via regular gameplay, events, etc.

Total number of microtransactions I've used in the game - zero.

Typically boosters can only be obtained from micro transactions, yes? Your verification of my point was never required nor needed.

 

In any case, until more details are presented to us further discussion is pointless.

No - I said the opposite - in every game I have played that has microtransactions, such are NOT the only way to get boosts; if they were, your issue viz. microtransactions would (in my opinion only) have more merit.

 

All I said was that (so far) microtransactions ONLY have not been an issue - because you could earn the same boosts without them - in fact, some you can't get via microtransactions at all - in other words, the opposite of your implication.

Well it sure is a good thing I wasn't looking for you to verify my opinion then.

 

I don't like non-cosmetic micro transactions in games. End of. You are free to disagree but that doesn't mean my opinion is less valid than yours.

I was getting MD before I heard about Breach. The 15 minute city hub demo, released the same day, gave me a lot of good feelings about the single player experience, with all the ways to get around and into the bookstore. Human Revolution was a solid game, and Mankind Divided looks like more of the same.

 

I'm mixed on Breach, but it's not going to make the game cost more or take longer to come out. It looks like it might be fun, but only to an extent. It's not going to make or break my decision to buy the game. I missed the part where they said it would have micro transactions, but I don't much care. It's a single player game. If you told me Bethesda was going to start charging micro transactions for the settlement building distraction in Fallout 4, I'd care about as much (even if we didn't have mods for that). Which is zero, or pretty close to it. I actually play Deus Ex games for the same reason I play Fallout games. To be a sneaky bastard who kills people without being seen. Fallout's sneak game isn't exactly on point, but when it works, it's nice.
