stupid question about Mandrake...

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys but I gotta ask this. How the freakin do I install Mandrake 8.1? :p

I'm not even gonna try installing it until I know every single step there is to it cause I really dont wanna screw something up...

So please... can anyone give me detailed instructions?

Oh, and I'm running Windows XP from a specific OS partition and I'd rather have a dualboot system with both Mandrake and XP than just Mandrake, if that is possible.

OHH and yeah... then when I've got Mandrake running, how do I get my Internet working? And what browsers does Mandrake support?

Thx..

hehe, i'm a newbie too, but here's a few things i noticed. the install was really easy and straightforward, the only thing i'm uncertain about is the type of file system to use. as for installing your network, it has a wizard that worked great for me, i just had to enter my ip and gateway and stuff. as for browsers, the default is konquerer, but you can use netscape, opera, and maybe a few others. as for the dual boot, you can install LILO, which will give you the option to boot into either XP or LM, or what i did was skipped the LILO part and just created the boot disk, so that way, when i want LM, i just put the floppy in and it boots straight to it. when i want xp, i just remove the floppy and it boots straight to xp. hope this helps a little.

ciao!

Here is some info about dual booting:

http://www.poopoccurs.com/linux/dualboot.html

To start the install you just make it boot from the cd-rom and it asks your all the stuff during the install and it has a partitioning wizard that just does the partitioning with ease. If you want ever detail try:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/81/en/user.html/

or a graphical version:

ext3 is actually ext2 but it uses journaling and waits a short period of time before it commits the write. It is much easier to recover from crashes and recover lost data. Reiserfs (is that spelt right) is the best and fastest.

I was a newbie a short while ago but Linux is really easy to pick up.
