My options to play Ocarina of Time on my Wii U?

Recommended Posts

I want to get into the Zelda series, and I've decided to start on the first 3D game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I have a Wii U with some Wii U Pro Controllers and some Wii Remote Plus with the Nunchuk attachment.

I do not want to buy a Nintendo 3DS.

What are my options in playing Ocarina of Time on my Wii U?

I believe my only option is to buy the game on the Wii U Virtual Console but I thought I'd post here, in case I've missed any alternatives.

If you don't want to go the route of doing things through the virtual console, you can buy Zelda Collectors Edition for GameCube and use Nintendont in Wii mode. It has all the games pre-windwaker and can usually be found at CEX and then resold back to them once you're done. :D

Edit: Welp, that game doubled in price since I last looked D:

Sadly, Wii U cannot play GameCube games on Wii Mode. He'd have to buy an original Wii or GameCube to play Zelda Collectors Edition.

Nintendont is a Wii mode homebrew to play gamecube games on Wii and WiiU

:p It can play it, Nintendont virtualises the missing hardware components e.g. Memory Card slots.

and is even compatible with the Pro controller (vibration and all)

love being able to play all my GameCube games on my WiiU this way

(though I don't know how much can be discussed here as you either need to rip your disks or acquire the ISOs elsewhere :) )

The Wii U is compatible with all Wii games and Wii accessories such as the Wii Remote (Plus), Wii Nunchuk, and the Wii Balance Board. It is possible to migrate most downloaded software and save files from a Wii to a Wii U. Although Wii games can be displayed on the GamePad's screen, they can only be controlled using a Wii controller, and not the GamePad's controller.

The Wii U is not compatible with GameCube discs or accessories. A USB GameCube controller adapter with four ports was released exclusively for use with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and does not support any other titles

He is talking about a homebrew program that will allow you to play Gamecube games on the Wii U.

Oops, my mistake! I had forgotten all about the homebrew scene on the Wii.

Perhaps I should pay more attention next time. :pinch:

I think even Nintendo have forgotten about all things Wii with the NX coming so soon. :p

Most likely. :p

I think it's even possible to do homebrew directly from the Wii U using some internet browser exploit. But I don't think they care enough to bother fixing it.

don't forget .n64 files. :D

Emulation is fine, too as long as you don't tell people where to get the ROMs without paying for the games. :)

Some people may notice that it looks like I've posted on GBATemp quite a bit, too. Yep, that is me. I don't don't advocate illicit ROMs there, either. :p

Won't it look better through the Virual Console?

Not necessarily. The VC version of OOT is the same as the Collector's Edition version, which is known for its slight audio issues, crashes (Slightly more than the N64 version), & minor visual glitches.

Sure, the issues are not too big, but in certain scenarios it could affect gameplay.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
