Macbook Pro A1278 Hard Drive

I have never worked on a Macbook Pro.  I have a friend whose Pro A1278 hard drive appears to have failed (flashing ? folder and nothing listed in Startup Manager).  I see the replacement is fairly simple, but is there a certain hard drive he needs to get or will any 2.5" SATA drive work?  If any, can he put in an SSD?  Thanks for the assistance.
