This is great news!

January 12, 2004 - Publisher Capcom Entertainment vaguely listed Resident Evil 4's release date as "200X" three years ago when it unveiled the title for Nintendo's GameCube console. Since that time, the company has remained very hush-hush about the anticipated fourth installment in the lucrative "survival horror" franchise, releasing only a few new screens and a brief teaser video.

But the wait for more information on the game could soon be over. Capcom today told IGNcube that Resident Evil 4 is scheduled to ship in the US in "the winter of 2004."

This is doubly sweet news first because it means that the 'X' in '200X' is not '5' for 2005, as some skeptics suspected. And second, it suggests that new details, screens and perhaps even videos may not be as far off as many had feared.

Capcom did not reveal a Japanese release date for the title. There is a chance that the company is aiming for a worldwide launch of the product and there is also the very real possibility that Resident Evil 4 may release first in the homeland some months earlier.

The official Japanese Biohazard website reiterates the 2004 release date of the game by way of a secret code. Interested readers can  to see the confirmation. Simply wait for the page to load, then click on the 'Biohazard 4' logo on the bottom-right corner of the screen. A password field will appear on the upper right side corner. Enter the password 'scott' and click on the 'OK' button. The secret 2004 release date will be displayed.

Resident Evil 4 stars classic character Leon S. Kennedy in an all-new adventure dealing with the corrupt Umbrella Corporation and the deadly T. Virus. Judging from video footage released and brief interviews with Capcom executives, it seems likely that this time around Kennedy becomes infected by the virus and struggles against it as he explores dark, ambient environments filled with danger. The title features exquisitely detailed graphics and runs in full 3D for the first time since the Dreamcast Code Veronica.

Resident Evil 4 -- yes, running in stunning real-time on GameCube

Though rumors have persisted that Capcom might also release Resident Evil 4 for PlayStation 2, the company in early January issued a firm denial, saying that the game is wholly exclusive to GameCube.

Capcom may reveal new information on the game before the end of the month. Stay tuned to IGNcube for more.
