ElGato
OK, my PC froze, (whilst removing a modem cable from around back), so I turned the machine off and tried to switch back on, and nothing at all, :disappoin . I have checked memory and that is OK, the LED on the MB lights up when power cable is connected but no other activity at all.

I've had that happen, are you running LILO by any chance? Best bet is to set up linux without LILO configuration, and then do it after installation.
