Everything we know so far about Star Wars Battlefront 2 including release date, setting and single-player

By Sam Loveridge and Justin Mahboubian-Jones

30 June 2017

Single-player is a core focus of the new game, which takes place after the destruction of the second Death Star. For fools without an encyclopaedic knowledge of Star Wars, that's between Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

You play Iden Versio, a specialist Imperial trooper. The story mostly follows her journey, but will occasionally switch perspective.

"It isn't a discrete set of missions or separate War Stories like Battlefield 1, you do follow Iden through this journey whilst from time to time, switching sides and playing from the perspective of one of the iconic heroes because again that's just part of Battlefront's DNA," the campaign director told Eurogamer.

Versio isn't alone, she's packing some deadly Imperial tech including a droid which "gives her a greater range, a greater reach, more versatility, more flexibility."

The campaign will lift content from comics as well as films. You may have noticed that the Emperor's voice persists in the trailer even after the Death Star explodes.

"That's actually a direct lift and a direct reference from the comic book Shattered Empire which does take place after the destruction of the second Death Star," said Steve Blank.

"That character's called The Messenger and is actually a contingency of the Emperor's that he leaves in the wake of his death to still give orders to very upper echelon members that are left from the Empire."

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Campaign Hands-On Preview: A Lighter Look at the Dark Side

Battlefront 2’s campaign takes a look at the Empire Luke left behind.

By Tom Marks

Spoiler warning and editor’s note: This preview contains plot details for the first three missions of Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s campaign, roughly the first two hours of the game. Additionally, one of Battlefront 2’s writers is former IGN editor Mitch Dyer. The author of this preview was hired after Dyer left IGN and has no relationship of any kind with him.

There’s an old Star Wars joke (best known from Kevin Smith’s Clerks) about all the janitors and construction workers who were innocently working on the second Death Star when it blew up. Sure, the Emperor was finally defeated, but what about the little people? Was working a day job for the Empire really deserving of such a grisly fate?

While Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s single-player story didn’t put me in control of anyone nearly as hapless as a space janitor, it does present a similar question. It pushed me to consider the Force-less faces on the other side, the people who were born and raised knowing nothing but the Empire, and the people left behind after the Galactic Civil War was “won” in Return of the Jedi.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 beta details leak

By Sherif Saed, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:43 GMT

The beta for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is less than four weeks away, and the full contents of it have been leaked.

The details come from Reddit user Some_Info, who has a good track record when it comes to revealing Battlefront 2 details ahead of the time.

The Redditor previously showed screenshots of the closed alpha before it was announced. He also correctly leaked details about the game’s first showing at E3 before EA revealed them.

First, the post confirms some details we already knew. The beta is going to include the Assault on Theed map that supports 40 players, and the Starfighter Assault mode on Fondor for 24 players. What we do learn, though, is that Strike on Takodana will also be among the maps.

Interestingly, Some_Info says that Skirmish mode will be part of the beta. Skirmish was a co-op-focused mode in the original game that featured modified maps and an arcade-style scoring with power-ups and weapon pickups. The Battlefront 2 beta version of Skirmish is said to support split-screen and online co-op for two players.

I may have missed this in the original announcement but split screen! I hadn't considered buying this but this bit of information intrigues me.

I'm hoping ea do the same thing they did with the first swb, so I'll be waiting to buy it, just in case.

Definitely on my 'to buy' list

shame it's not 64 players for ground and 32 for space or even 64 for space....i guess we have consoles to thank for the lower player counts again.

Goddamn consoles.

Kinda excited for this game. A few good ones coming out this fall after a drought.

No idea - haven't played any of the Assault modes yet (saving that for Saturday and Sunday).

I DID try the Naboo Wipeout mode today (played as Darth Maul - the only character available in the beginning) - unfortunately, my N00bness in shooters is in Full Effect - yeccch. (As Popeye the Sailor Man would say, "How Embarraskin!" I don't blame the game - I blame me.)

Same, but after playing the debacle that is Destiny 2, I just did have the patience to learn the controller layout nor the game mechanic, think I won't bother with it at all.

I think I just had one of those days... I just HATED everything about it, it felt more of the same, just bigger, I may pick it up at a much later date, if just for the storyline missions. For now, I'll hold out for the Zero Dawn expansion and rdr next year.

How We've Updated Crates and Progression

We've Listened to Your Feedback

We went into Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II with a goal to make the deepest, biggest Star Wars™ game you've ever played. That meant transporting you to all three eras and handing you a huge assortment of heroes, classes, and vehicles – as well as bringing tons of free post-launch content to all Star Wars Battlefront II players.

The Beta gave us a welcome chance to test all of our systems in action and tune things up for better balance. A few weeks back, we mentioned we were going to take another look at how the progression system works. After incorporating feedback from the Beta, we’re happy to share our plans for launch:

  • Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates. To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs.
  • You'll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards. You won't be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards. You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.
  • Weapons are locked behind specific milestones. While a select few will be found in Crates, the rest can only be attained by play. Want to unlock a new weapon for your Heavy? Play as a Heavy and you’ll gain access to the class’s new weapons.
  • Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them. As you progress through your favorite class, you’ll hit milestones granting you class-specific Crates. These will include a mix of Star Cards and Crafting Parts to benefit your class’s development.

This system, as well as all of the others, will be continually iterated on and improved. As we first announced at EA Play in June, we’re committed to keeping the community together. All upcoming weapons, maps, heroes, and vehicles introduced in Star Wars Battlefront II’s post-release content will be free so that players can play alongside friends as the world of Star Wars Battlefront II continues to grow. We know that the magic is in the balance, and we're going to make sure that we continue to make a game that is fun for everyone.
