As to the OP, I'd recommend a 1600X over a 1700 unless you're a streamer, heavy multitasker or compile stuff a lot.  You can check some benchmarks but the higher clock easily makes it outperform the 1700 in games.

All Ryzen processors are multiplier unlocked.

Once purchased, OP can get more clock speed, but he can't get more cores.

Sure for people who overclock, but a lot of people don't.

If need be, down the road they can upgrade to the next line of AMD procs since they'll still be AM4.

Thanks all for your suggestions and comments.

I've tinkered a bit with the components and have the following:

With the latest Ryzen motherboard updates, does that fix all the "fast" memory issues (I've checked and the memory isnt on any QVLs).

Will I be able to run the above RAM at close the 3200MHz its rated at or will it be relegated to a lower speed ?

As for games, I suppose I want the option to play whatever I want without having to worry about running into issues.

So anything from heavilly modded Minecraft to Wolfenstein 2 on Ultra.

I don't really upgrade all that often (maybe 5 - 6 years) so want something that I can almost fire and forget without going totally crazy.

I suppose with the support of AM4 for a good number of revisions of Zen I can swap out for the 2nd (or 3rd) generation if needed, but the above gives me a good base on which to build.

Can wait for a while on the above to see if any price drops turn up.

The price drops on the processor and motherboard already happened.

Prices of memory, SSDs, and video cards keep going up and up, so I am not sure that you would necessary get better prices by waiting.

The best time to buy has already past.

I have the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 MHz and it can run at 2933 MHz.

At minimum, you should be able to run at that speed.

At what resolution do you play at? I still find it surprising that display resolution is never asked (nor provided) when building PC's. In order to chose your graphics card, it makes a big difference if you play at 1080p, 1440p or 4K. For the first a GTX1070 will do just fine, for the second, a GTX1070 would still do (depending on certain games) but a GTX1080 would be better (or a GTX 1070Ti, if it is already out), and for the latter a GTX1080Ti is pretty much implied if you expect to play with all the bells and whistles.
