repurposing Win xp. pentium, 1gb  machine for print server (has a parallel port)

evidently connecting to router

Message from troubleshooter says cannot link to HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and suggests firewall problem

turning off firewall does not help

router is linksys with two Windows 10 machines, Wired Printer and a chromebook and another printer (wireless) that communicate ok

Clicking the NETWORK tab on one of the win 10 machines shows the XP machine

Clicking the HOMEGROUP tab shows "create a homegroup

however on the 2ed win 10 Msg is "you've been invited to join a homegroup"

and on the XP machine I can get the message that #2 (user not administrator) has created a homegroup) unauthorized and I do not have password

any suggestions

thanks

What?  XP can not join a homegroup..

You want your box to be a print server then install linux and make it a print server.. XP is not a print "server" sort of OS.. Its sure and the hell not going to be able to serve up drivers for windows 10 machines, etc..

At this point I'm trying to get rid of user  homegroup on W10 PC#2

any way administrator can nuke it?

have not tried to join homegroup with xp machine

Here's where I'm at

I can get to Google and "successfully connect to www.microsoft.com  port 80 working

but not to Windows Update (HTTPS)

HTTPS error 12029

FTP Error 12002

info

Under DNS

not a home user DNS Scenario

info> using Web proxy: no

No DNS Servers

DNS Failure

Could not get proxy setting via auto proxy configuration

thanks

btw I have a DOS machine with (HUGE Cal Comp) Flatbed scanner IDE card interface- just keeps chugging

And it sure and the F is not needed for print server anyway.. Even if you were going to share the printer with XP.. But than again trying to share printer via XP to windows above XP not good idea.. Why not just direct connect to the printer?  What kind of printer are you trying to share some usb thing?  Pretty much any $50 printer these days would be wifi or wired these days..

No need of a printer "server" unless you wanted to control access and drivers and track print jobs, etc. etc.  None of which would be done with XP.

Printer is a large format with parallel port  prints 11x17 at high res

I can get an adapter to usb and try that

but I'd still like to be able to communicate with it

and be able to run windows update

it can be a word processing station and be off the web most of the time

I think we are using alternate DNS from DNS jumper but I'l check

Huh?

Dude if you want to run a print server for this thing.  Then do that - run say cups on linux connected via your LPT port.. You can then share out this printer with many different protocols. SMB, IPP, LPD, etc.

If you have some LPT printer and you want to put in on your network.. Why not something as cheap and simple as

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-PS110P-parallel-ethernet-Internet/dp/B003CFATR4

$35

What is the exact make and model of the printer?  That above link supports like 230 some different printers.

LOOKS good Budman  thanks

I have a usb to parallel that works- sort of but that TP Link looks better

They just brought me a box with no PS2 mouse and keyboard ports- I have a usb mouse but cant fine my usb kb....Win seven is evidently trashed...

still want to get the internet working on the small form factor XP box

Dude so you have the CM model.. It comes standard with the built in Jetdirect print server...

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-2500c-pro-printer-series/25516/model/14466/document/bpd06172#AbT0

HP Jetdirect 400N Internal Print Server (standard with the HP 2500CM printer)

Lets start over... Why do you think you need some Print server, and why do you think it needs a LPT connection?

The correct solution if you have some other model of this 2500 the C the Cse, the Cxi etc.. on the link above would be to buy the JetDirect card from HP..   I show them for $50 on amazon

    • Dead by Daylight, Two Point Museum, and more join Xbox Free Play Days for the weekend by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe There is a brand-new Free Play Days offer available to Xbox players, giving them a chance to try out a new selection of games over the weekend. Microsoft's latest promotion brings some high-profile titles, including the sports title PGA TOUR 2K25 and the racing sim Assetto Corsa. Almost all the games being offered this time require an Xbox Game Pass subscription, with only one title being available for all players. Starting with the fully free-to-play section, Dead by Daylight is populating it solo. This asymmetric survival horror title should be the most familiar to most gamers, considering its age. The multiplayer four-versus-one asymmetric survival horror game has you assuming the roles of survivors or the killer to see who can come out on top. This Dead by Daylight offer will be available to play until Monday, June 22, giving you an extra day of play compared to the remainder of the Free Play Days titles. Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members can now try out the well-received tycoon game Two Point Museum, the circuit racing sim Assetto Corsa, as well as 2K's golf sim experience that gives players a career to develop alongside real-world pros and courses. Here are the announced games and the platforms they are available to play on: PGA TOUR 2K25 (Xbox Series X|S) Two Point Museum (Xbox Series X|S) Assetto Corsa (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) Dead by Daylight (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) To easily find the titles on Xbox consoles, first head to the Store, and then in the sidebar, find the Home section. In there, open the Subscriptions tab. All the games from the Free Play Days collection will show up in this section for quick access. Apart from Dead by Daylight's offer, this week's Free Play Days promotions will end on Sunday, June 21, at 11:59 pm PT.
