Is there a way I can not get a new system, but rather tone down my current system?

 

Keep almost everything I have, board/cpu/ram.

 

But update the GFX, PSU, Case, maybe?

 

I have heard of those less powerful SFX PSUs, anyone know anything about them?

 

And for GFX, 1050 or Ti or 1060? As I said above, I currently do not game. But ever if I wanted to, I'm not looking for high settings here.

 

As for cases, I like Fractal Design case, but is there something like it that has a smaller footprint? Good ventilation? Can can hold my radiator of my H75? can hold a full GFX card?

Dell Precision series is always well built. Pretty much arguing how many Angels can dance on the head of a pin when comparing Dell Precision with HP ZBook and Lenovo Thinkpad P series. All of them are as good as it gets when configured right. It drives me nuts that all three manufacturers will have a low-end crappy LCD screen option on otherwise exemplary hardware. Lenovo has been the worst offender in that area. For Dell the buyer has to specify "UltraSharp with Premium Panel" (Dell's secret password for "not crap") and for HP, the spec is simply "DreamColor." For Lenovo, I don't know. The problem has been that these Workstations are often sourced by corporate purchasing departments who are usually oblivious to these non-standard LCD designations. I have often been tempted to grab one of these "old faithfull" units on Ebay only to see a set of perfect specs ruined by a 1366x768 TN panel!

 

On the consumer side, the Dell XPS series fits that premium build role.

 

Compared to Precision and XPS, Latitude models have lessor build quality and specs and are always overpriced, but of course most importantly they are NOT junk. But every business that buys Latitudes should strain like crazy to source a Precision or XPS.

It is clear from various threads that you want something about your daily use computer to be smaller. I suspect you should really dig into what you want to achieve in terms of design objectives without visualizing any hardware solutions or budgets.

 

If you had unlimited funds, would an answer come immediately to mind?

 

Do you want to end up with a particular aesthetic?

 

Or just need more room on your desk?

 

Would the new Mac Pro All-in-ONe with 5K LCD and 18 core Xeon fit the aesthetic?

 

Or perhaps "Invisible Computing" where the computer is hidden in the wall or inside a custom desk?

Thats something I have been bouncing back & forth in my head recently.

In my office - the onlly thing visible is a keyboard, monitor and mouse.

I love the "clean aesthetic" - and something I am thinking of on my next build.

Problem is, I am also in the market for a new car, and like my car wishing, I cant make up my mind.

There are a lot of different design approaches one could consider. Different strokes...

 

I like Duct Tape Aesthetic where you screw all the components to a piece of plywood on the wall.

 

And Wall Of Monitors Aesthetic to get that military control room vibe,

 

And Room Jammed With Laptops And Monitors Everywhere Aesthetic like old Stargate Atlantis episodes...

Interesting device.

 

Weak for gaming, very strong for many desktop workloads, high quality 17" screen but just 1920 x 1080, and severely reduced battery life adds up to a nice work focused computer that mainly stays on a desk and takes up little space compared to a desktop.

 

I think it is missing the right balance needed for good "value" but it has some characteristics that speak to the original requirements.

Yet I could run Xubuntu on it fine.

Vostros were dells budget specials, even some of their "unique" asset tags on the Vostros dont show the right model when you enter it into Dell support.

My mind is floating in the air. I can't grab the idea yet. I'm giving you ideas; you provide answers.

 

What I'm looking for is a lower powered machine, with gaming behind it, if I ever plan to game in the future.

 

Don't even start me with Macs...

If I did that - 

I'd have to spec out a build something like a 
Pentium 3 500MHz
32 MB EDO RAM
2MB TNT2 Riva video card
and maybe I could squeeze in a Sound Blaster

Hello,

 

If you want to upgrade your existing computer instead of purchase a new laptop, perhaps it would be better to start a separate thread on the subject?  I am sure an admin would be happy to move all relevant replies out of this thread to the new one.  That way, you can continue looking at both options separately instead of getting a mix of responses.

He does not know exactly what he wants.

 

If you look at his recent thread starts, he has quite a number of them that add up to the same thing:

 

He has some sort of unease or unsettled feeling or mysterious Wuthering Heights type longing for things unseen, unsaid, unknown, ethereal like a fluorescent blue butterfly caught in his head but gently caressing his neurons with the touch of gossamer wings, just one synapse at a time...

 

He wants ideas, perhaps wild and crazy, perhaps to get angry or sad, anything to trigger a spark that lands him on a solid plan to release him from existential pain of computer hardware that somehow misses adapting to the flow of his personal aesthetic.

Obviously I don't see the universe through the eyes of Sir Johnathan Ive because I find Apple stuff ugly, awkward, over priced uninspiring design except for two products:

 

1. The Mac Pro desktop that looks like an office garbage can.

 

2. The new Mac Pro All-In-One with a 5K screen and a 18 core Xeon.

 

The powerful All-In-One would would eliminate wires and pack the most power possible to be glued onto the rear of a monitor.

 

Wipe Mac OS off the unit so Apple Irritation is in the rear view mirror and install Windows 10 or your Minty Thing, buy a nice zillion-button Gaming Mouse and a good Gaming Mechanical Keyboard to replace Apple Mouse Junk and you have a unique aesthetic happening.

 

Since we are just attempting to spark aesthetic images in your head, we can ignore the tiny question of how much a 18 core Xeon 5K All-In-One might cost...

As for the MAC, I hate them. Why would you even suggest one? And I don't need a stupid Xeon...

 

I should stop asking for build questions here. There's no point. I should just go with my guts. Watch a few YT vids, read reviews.

I have my own brand of British dry humor, but I am not mocking you.

 

I am trying to suggest to everyone that we knock heads together and try and see where you are blocked and then give you useful or at least somewhat creative ideas. If we all have a bit of fun with it on the way, well that's Neowin and that's good cheer for all concerned.

 

You have made a bunch of threads and then a multitude of posts within those threads changing your mind and wavering back and forth on things.

 

Right now, you don't have a build problem, you have a "murky-ambiguous-uncertain-wavering objective" problem. That's ok, but just admit it and then let everyone help you.

 

The Xeon-Mac was just a "thought experiment" - made famous by Einstein. If you visualized the world's most powerful all-in-one computer on your desk with no extra wires or anything else would that spark a positive or negative feeling? I used the Mac because until now, all-in-ones have been associated with some sort of compromise and that would have just interfered with the imagination...

 

But as it turns out, using the word "Mac" interfered with the imagination before the concept of "all-in-one" had a chance to do likewise so that's just a bunch of "never mind"

 

Next imaginative spark idea... Anyone?

He has already made a bunch of threads. Might as well keep it all in one thread and hash it out until something comes together. Right now, your idea of a separate thread would lead to a hundred more threads on essentially the same subject.

 

Please reword this post in your head as if that amazing guy Goretsky had written it in his very polite and respectful manner. :)

 

EDIT: my previous reply was unusually abstract and so I'm just suggesting to everyone that we "tough it out" right here on hamburger hill until something converges.

      There is nothing wrong with this title. You have completely missed the plot when it comes to "clickbait." The issue was never that a title tries to entice you to click, that is how titles have worked for over 100 years. The issue is when the title subverts expectations, getting you to click expecting something that isn't there. The classic clickbait example is "Boyfriend caught cheating, what happens next will shock you," then what happened next is the girlfriend was upset...which is probably the least shocking outcome imaginable. If sounds like what you want is for the titles to be a collection of 10-word summaries that you can skim, get the just of the story, and only click if you want more details. That is not, never has been, and never will be what titles are. You can go all the way back to print newspapers during the great depression and see the same thing. The newspaper was locked in a vending machine, all you can see is the headline, you choose to put in 5¢ to buy the paper and read the rest if you want. Those headlines were written in a way to sell the paper, not just to provide a summery. Here are two actual headlines from that time, "Wall Street Lays an Egg," or "Stocks Hit Bottom?" Maybe you'd say something like "it was wrong then and it's still wrong now." Okay, fine opinion to have, but it isn't like Neowin is doing something unjurnalistic, they are just following the age-old standards for written media.
