I recently got a windows device and can't find a half-decent video editor. I've been using a website that's simple and great, but they announced that they will be shutting the site down because they were bought by GoPro or something like that. The choices in the microsoft store are just terrible, I've tried like 15-20 of them and they're all garbage. I don't need anything big or professional, just a simple video editor/creator. At this point I'd happy just to be able to put video clips together then add music/audio and the transitions, FX, themes, etc.. would be a plus. Also with a limit of 10 to 20 minutes, no Magisto or Animoto with 30 second long videos or WeVideo that puts a huge ridiculous watermark on your videos. I used an app called VivaVideo on an Android tablet that got the job done, but not available for Windows. Any suggestions?

I am curious to know what procedure you employed to locate a very long list of crappy editors, without encountering anything solid.

Anyways for basic starter info on anything in human space, one starts with Wikipedia

Attempted OSS:

Lightworks is used in commercial video editing and is mostly free and it supposedly OSS, but they have not released the source yet.

OSS 3D:

Blender is a 3D Editor that has a video editing component

OSS Effects:

Like Adobe After Effects, Natron comes with standard plugins and can host 3rd party plugs.

Shotcut is a great free video editor - if you want something simpler and easy to  use take a look at Movavi Video Editor Plus.

Don't know what criteria you employ to select software to post, but the free video editor list above might have a worthwhile candidate for you.

An UPDATE to my list of Video editing software to look at:

The FREE version of DaVinci Resolve version 16 (which is often featured on Neowin) is at this point extremely full featured and perhaps should be the first FREE Video Editing software to consider using.

Also interesting in terms of the time spent learning to use it, the upgrade to the full professional version is cheap by industry standards, only $300 instead of thousands. Most casual users will never need to upgrade from the FREE version, but it might be comforting to know that the option is available.

On the other side, I find it annoying that it installs a resident PostGreSQL DB Server.
