What annoys me most about all this is that, in 5 years time my mortgage will be paid.  In 10 years I plan to retire. I -was- going to retire to Spain, but I guess that won't be quite so easy any more! :(

Ironically enough, (I game with a lot of American gamers) I was in Destiny 2, with my gaming buddies, and some random guy (to me) joined our party, as soon as he heard my accent, he started with all that crap, our pronunciation of words (aluminium, jaguar etc..) then went on about our dental, so I said more or less exactly what you just posted. He was laughed out of the party.

Speaking as someone whose from Michigan, whose two peninsulas are connected by the  8 kilometer Mackinac Bridge, this would be an easy engineering project.  Big Mac allows a huge amount of shipping traffic to pass under it between and beyond the Great Lakes states. This and 3 major bridges between MI and Ontario, soon to be 4.

 

All that's needed for the Channel is to build two broad causeways with a Mackinac-size bridge mid-way across.  Alternatively, 3 causeways and 2 bridges to expedite even more shipping. Over-ocean causeways are a long-ago solved tech; the US Overseas Highway runs between Florida and the Keys. Hurricane country.

 

Unless you guys are afraid of cheaper & easier transport than the limited amount of traffic which can pass through a tunnel (we have one of those to Canada too) or by  air.....

simple solution, build a bridge between Boris`s ears (no resistance or blockages between point A & B) 

 

and deploy another tunnel.......problem solved :)

Yep. A height of more than 200 m is required.

 

Denmark has built two bridges of this kind on the European route E20, separating the Baltic Sea from the North Sea.

The big Maersk Triple E container ships have an air draft of 55.4 - 58.2 meters when fully loaded and 60 - 62.7 meters otherwise.

 

Michigan's Big Mac bridge, built in the 1950's, is 168.25 meters and the Straits of Mackinac see 30+ meter waves - remember the Edmund Fitzgerald?

 

Detroit-Windsor's upcoming Gordie Howe International bridge will be about 250 meters high. 

 

Engineering folks, engineering.  Build it high, adding causeways and spans as required.
