NAS, Build or Pre-Made?

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at NAS devices lately. I see, they are rather expensive for 4+ bays. (need at least 4, but expansion is a good thing)

I understand that NAS devices don't need that whole lot of power. Or CPU usage. Unless you are running plex or something. Just lotta RAM and HDD write/reads.

So is there a way I can make my own? And save some money rather than the $300 Pre-Made NAS devices?

i3, or maybe even a Celeron should do, right?

ITX motherboard should do me well. Long as it has 4 SATA ports.

I have spare RAM, max 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 and DDR4

500W PSU should do it.

Passive cooling will be fine, as it will be down in the basement, so rather cool.

Case, whatever I can pick up...

I have 2x 3TB WD Blue and 2x 3TB WD Green HDDs.

As I said above, can you get a $300-$400 custom made NAS?

Software, I'll think about.

(This all make sense? Am I thinking correctly? if not, ASK)

Talking about headware, not software. I know FreeNAS, UNRAID, NAS4Free, etc.

Their forum has this info - https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?forums/will-it-freenas-freenas-build-discussion.70/

Hello,

I have the same motherboard, but am using it for testing software.  I would think it would do fine as a NAS.
