Copy speeds slow to USB3 External Hard Drive

Hello Friends,

 

I have a Seagate ST5000DM000 external hard drive connected to a USB 3.0 port and I get really slow speeds when copying data. Usually the speed tops out at around 2.0Mbps per second. I have done some searching and have gone in to the Device Manager and under the Policies tab I have Better Performance checked and Enable Write Caching. This external is strictly for backup purposes, nothing is being read or copied to it frequently. I'm going to try running a Check Disk and a Defrag, but I doubt those will make much difference.

 

Other there any other suggestions I can try? Thank you!

 

Other maybe important info:

Motherboard = Z170A Gaming M5 (Latest Firmware)

OS = Windows 10 Pro

Is the the usb dock for the drive usb 3.0?

I was curious when you asked if it had a dock, as it was in an enclosure packaged by Seagate. So I did a quick search for the Model Number I posted and found this: 

 

 

So apparently, the actual hard drive was an OEM drive. It was weird because when I did a Serial Lookup there was no warranty on it. How very ###### of Seagate.

 

Anyway, back on topic. I was able to copy files before and I do remember them getting up to 80Mbps per second. I did notice that after the past couple big Windows 10 updates is when it started to slow down.

Have you been able to test it on another usb 3 pc?

I don't have another one at home, but I do have one at my office. I can give it a shot there.

if the speeds are poor on both, its probably an issue with the drive.

I had an unopened 4TB Western Digital External and speeds are fine with that. Looks like the drive is bad.

That or the cable is bad...

 

Try looking up its SMART data.

I ran Crystal Info on it and everything was fine. I checked the Serial on the actual External Case and there is a different serial number. The serial I posted above is the serial of the actual hard drive. So good news is the drive is still under warranty until July, going to RMA it.
