Issue with a LG Nexus 5x

Recommended Posts

So I purchased this phone, unlocked, for ~$100, and I am in the process of setting it up, and it has a system update, android 8.0 from 7.1, but so for reason it will not download the update, it keeps trying to download it, but it keeps pausing the download, and I have to tap resume. I have tried to search for this issue online, but the only info I can find is about boot problems, which I do not have. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this issue?

Find the image you need for your model. Instructions are on that page.

Thanks, how do I tell exactly which one I need? I found my model listed, but there is a whole bunch listed ranging from 7.0 to 8.1.0 all with different names. Do I just grab the latest one?

Yup. You can get the last one.

Beware! Nexus 5X Owner here:

The phone will become super slow after you install apps on Android 8.x. To the point that you would like to throw your phone away.

I'm not kidding. The reason behind it is that Android Oreo has a new Background Optimization feature that many apps do not support. When an app doesn't support it, it lets it run in the background with proper management control and it will eat your CPU.

The fix is to go to settings "Apps & Notifications", and click any app, click on "Battery". If it says "Battery Optimization is in use", then you're good to go. But , if there is something that says "App Background Activity is limited when not in use". Turn it off . Notifications sometimes may be affected (Nothing critical on my end), but this speeds up  your phone considerably.

You must do this for every app in your phone, as one single and measly app can bring the phone to a crawl. As time progresses, apps will be updated, and the need to turn off the background activity will dwindle.

I ended up making this video to better explain it:

I unlocked the bootloader and this time it took. Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it working. Looks like it will be getting security updates for about 1 more month. That phone looks like one that should be pretty well supported by a custom rom.

It is a very nice phone, and super fast compared to what I had prior! I will look into the custom ROM's at a later time, but it is good to know that it is supported!

So another odd (and frustrating) issue: I have an app that requires USB debugging to be enabled and then I have to execute a command via adb shell to run the service. Now all of the sudden I get a message stating that the service is not running, so I plug the phone into my system and attempt to run the command, only to discover that the phone is not showing up in the system. Any ideas how to correct this issue?

Chances are, your USB drivers are incorrect and/or not working properly. A while back I linked you to a tool that helps remove all android drivers from your computer, run that and if this is a Windows 10 machine, XDA Forums users suggest letting Windows grab the driver. If that doesnt work, or it is a machine below Windows 10, you can use the official Google drivers.

OK, I have the tool still, I will run it and see what happens.

Used the USBDeview and removed all traces of old cell phones and generic MTP devices and now it is working! Thanks @Circaflex for the suggestion.

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
