Open photo files (jpeg, png) in Windows 10: "The data is invalid"

Recommended Posts

When I try to open jpeg or png files in the standard Windows 10 Photos app, the message appears that "the data is invalid".

I can, however, open the same file in Paint or other programs listed via the "Open with..." (right mouseclick)

I run Windows 10, v 1809, 17763.437

What can be the issue here? How can I fix this?

have you tried resetting the photos app?

if that doesn't work then you could always say screw the UWP photos app and re-enable the legacy Win32 photo viewer :)

Nope. Resetting didn't work.

Uninstalling did. However, I cannot get it downloading again via the Windows Store; error messages.

Error message: Code: 0x8007000D

I even upgraded via the Insiders Program to 1903 (2019H1), maybe hoping to get some fixes within Windows during the upgrade. Without success.

What to do? Resetting/reinstalling Windows 10?

Or are there still other options?

Note: I also have issues with the build-in Windows Calculator; it won't start

for the pre-loaded apps you usually have to reinstall them from powershell if you uninstall them

if that doesn't work then I'd switch to the legacy Windows Photo Viewer as I posted above or another 3rd party photo viewer such as Honeyview. That way you don't have to do a complete system reinstall :)

Honeyview is quite nice; I use it at work because they chose to uninstall the UWP Photos app and didn't re-enable the old Windows Photo Viewer (and reg changes are blocked by admin)

edit: that error code seems to point to potential corrupt/missing system file. here's a couple pages I found on google to help correct that part

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/error-code-0x8007000d/c585b846-9947-420f-94b4-a856f59b489c

If I had to take a wild ass guess you have some sort of corruption going on... calc doesn't run, photo viewer doesn't work - you can not download stuff from the store..

You sure your disk is fine?

Have you tried running sfc/scannow from an elevated command prompt?

I tried all suggestions.

Thanks @Brandon H @BudMan @jnelsoninjax @warwagon

Unfortunately, none of these worked 😡

I have reset my PC. With some new installing of software... everything works again: Calc is opening up, Photos app is working, MS Store is launching.

Happy again 😁

Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
