Microsoft to Bring Server Technologies into Xbox 2?

While the Xbox 2 is still quite far away from now, there are more and more details emerge about the technology base for the console. After the original Xbox many observers expected Microsoft to continue using hardware found in desktop PCs, but this time executing wiser to keep the costs of the next console down. However, it now transpires that the software giant clearly wants to adopt IBM?s server technologies for its next-generation gaming console.

It is now official that Microsoft will use IBM?s POWER 64-bit processors in the Xbox 2. The 65nm chips were reportedly taped-out recently and are now evaluated by engineers at Microsoft and IBM, though, the architecture of those microprocessors still remains to be investigated, TeamXbox web-site reports.

As everybody knows, there is a lot going on with multi-core, multi-threaded designs at IBM. Apparently, Microsoft also wants to jump on that bandwagon, the source indicated. The Redmond, Washington-based firm wants to incorporate IBM?s POWER 976 architecture into the CPUs for Xbox 2 console to allow truly high-performance processing. POWER 976 is expected to be a dual-core processor able to handle two threads at once. What may seem a pretty hard to believe is that Microsoft wants more than 1 such chip to power its forthcoming console, according to claims over Mercury News.

The whole Xbox 2 CPU system will be capable of processing a number of threads simultaneously; because of its RISC nature, the new architecture is a big-endian system, a term that describes the order in which a sequence of bytes are stored in computer memory. Traditional x86 architectures use the little-endian approach, TeamXbox notes.

Even though the Xbox 2 will hardly take advantage of more than 4GB memory addressable by 64-bit, it is supposed to make use of its other benefit: wider data paths and registers. Furthermore, in case the information is correct and this is actually an SMP design, the processing power inside the Xbox 2 will be comparable with a server.

While consoles usually impress us with their specifications and performance figures at first, lifespan of gaming machines is so long that theoretical performance of a 2 or 3 year old console is below that of a typical personal computer.

Graphics chip for the console is being designed by ATI Technologies and is likely to be a sort of R500/DirectX 10 architecture. The part should definitely be capable of handling increasingly popular HDTV resolutions with FSAA. To address memory bandwidth issues, an embedded DRAM buffer will be located on or inside the graphics chip, a technology ArtX/ATI used for Flipper chip found in Nintendo?s GAMECUBE.

Microsoft or IBM?s spokesperson usually do not comment on unannounced products.

I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
