Visual Studio Code - i want to get it to work with the ESP8266

Question

Visual Studio Code - i want to get it to work with the ESP8266

which extensions do i need to add?

The whole design of Visual Studio Code is so that it should be easily be configured for any development language using these extensions.

do i need to install the Arduino IDE?

if i am able to go roound the Arduino IDE  - i would be happy.

Like most of the IDE's I have tried, they rely on the Arduino IDE for all the libraries. - but if i am able to work with VS-Stidio-Code and ESP 8266 directly i would be happy.

how to set it up  and to make sure that i have fully configured Visual Studio Code to work with all the necessary  add-on for ESP8266

which extensions i should add and install?

note: i am on Windows 7

    • In the old days i'd spend hours playing 3D Pinball, when i got tired of that, switched to playing Need for Speed High stakes a while, or Police Quest Swat games i had back then. Minesweeper & Solitarie i never was any good at unforuately Did have installed on older PC Then EA Sports NHL Hockey game lol, and Madden NFL games at times, Simcity 2000, Flight Sim 2000, Palace chat, and then later on got into SecondLife in early 2008, and that took up alot of my time after that lol Watched sometimes TV shows in Windows Media Center in the old days--til that faded away into distant past lol. Honestly i was amazed with older MS Windows version i did so much on my old At&t Dsl 6mb connection lol. Gaming Updates NetMeeting video conferences Yahoo Messenger webcam usage at times MSN Messenger games with contacts--checkers, believe was a Pool game as well, though can't remember exactly what all games was available at the time with Messenger lol Windows Live Mail used til it went unsupported, then switched to Outlook Desktop app that came with MS Office purchase Windows Live OneCare til 2009 Skype was one of probably first users, when they had a year of free calling to mobile or landline, probably around 2007 as i remember using it a bit when i was still using Palace chat at the time. Used til it was offically shutdown in May 2025 Skydrive, and later Onedrive used since release I used alot of Microsoft products over the years, even had Sidewinder Headset, Keyboard, Mouse, and Joystick, and Gamepad up til they stopped being supported or no longer worked, then switched to Logitech
