I recently got an email from Comcast insisting I upgrade my modem to better support new speeds. I had tried this before about a year ago and could never get the new equipment to work. i even had a tech come in and he could not get me connected with even 2 different modem.

Well, you obviously needed a second tech.

generally it's better to have a separate router for WiFi anyway as modems and modem/router combo devices generally are horrible about getting updates for very long if at all which is bad if security flaws are found

Outside of telephony, the router and modem are separate - the telephony router is a backup wireless AP for areas the current main router does not cover (and once I get my Netgear Orbi, it will slide further down).  Netgear's Orbi is like the main and single-satellite Amazon eero - a Wifi6 mesh system - and I have had nary an issue with my Broadcom-chipset-based Netgear routers - this will be my third.
