12 year old notebook and poor WiFi; can an internet USB-adapter be of help here?

Recommended Posts

My dad has an old Asus laptop of 12 years or so (Windows 10 installed). It 1 of 2 he's got, the other one is 2 years old.

The old one is not the fastest, but is doing its work in the attic (mainly some household finances, writing a mail, printing a document once in a while etc). It's connected via WiFi with the modem/router 2 floors down.

The internet connection on it isn't that great. The WiFi signal om Windows is just one 1 dot (not the signal-icons).

Can this be related to the build-in WiFi adapter - which is also 12+ more years old. And can a Dual-Band Wireless-AC600 Wi-Fi adapter (USB) be of help here, like e.g. Asus USB-AC51 for a better, more stable and faster internet speed?

In that case doesn't have to buy a new laptop to do this temp work on this machine.

Possibly, best thing to do is try it and return if it does not.

Hello,

You might want to look for an adapter with a larger antenna.  If this makes the machine unwieldy to use, you may be able to mount it on the back some place by using a short USB extension cord and some electrical tape.
