Acquired a Gateway P5-133 for some Retro Gaming.

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I acquired a Gateway p5 133. Boy does this computer bring back memories. I'm going to use it for some old school dos gaming. The computer came with 16 megs of memory which probably would have been ok, but I wanted to add more.

I was worried such an old machine might take a special type of memory that I might not have but nope, I had a box full of it! So I upgraded it to 64 megs.

When I went out to my shed, into my tub of REALLY old audio card, I came across an ESS ISA card. Turns out that is one of the best Sound Blaster clone cards. Installed it and it works great.

I also have an STB PCI graphics card which I’m not sure if it has any 3d graphics acceleration. I guess I'll find out when I install the drivers.

What should be arriving by the end of the week is a Compact Flash to PCI adapter. This will allow me to put in a compact flash card, into the back of the computer. It also allows me to remove it and plug it into a card reader so I can easily transfer files to and from the old computer, because that machine is a pain to take the case off.

While I wait for a CF card to IDE and the CF card, I just pull the hard drive out and hook it up to a spare workstation I have setup, then just boot in to a PE environment and transfer some files to the hard drive and connect it back to the gateway. I'm going to be using that for the time being until my compact flash card and reader arrives. I had originally thought about upgrading the CD drive and using CD-RW disks. I did find a brand new sealed RW disk that wasn't even opened but had some issues burning the disk. I have quite the collection of IDE and Sata CD/DVD drives to choose from.

Installed some dos games and they run great. Also installed Windows 95 tonight, and that 64 megs of ram really speeds things up.

I used to have a whole bagful of SDRAM, but unsure where it went to...

I still have my bag of 15 network PCI cards. But driver support ended after Win 2k...

The real question is whether you'll still enjoy those old games.

I revisited Rainbow Six Ravenshield a few years back and boy was I disappointed.  OG Oregon Trail would still probably be the bomb though.

Ya, doom is pretty fun.

Christmas 2018 , we all loaded a version of OG Trail on dos box on all the laptops and everyone around the table was playing it. They had fun.

Who died? 🤣

Got the Compact Flash to IDE adapter installed today. Now I just have to reinstall DOS again, then just copy over the files from the IDE hard drive I had already installed on the spinning hard drive. Yesterday I also installed Windows 95 .. that was a blast!

    • It's time to say goodbye to Edge and switch back to Firefox. There's no way to disable the ugly rounded corners that appear everywhere. Not even on the page frame. No one uses screens with rounded corners, you idiots.
    • Being on Github makes it more trustable since I can see the code at any point.
    • Gen Atlas is the next game from Shadow of the Colossus creator, this time with giant robots by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The mind behind widely well-received games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, Fumito Ueda, showed up at Summer Game Fest today, and that was to reveal his latest project. Being developed by genDESIGN, Gen Atlas is incoming with what looks to be plenty of mech and robot action. Watch the reveal trailer, which makes not much sense, above. The game will have players waking up on an abandoned planet where deserted facilities and grand designs from the original creators remain. Soon, they will stumble upon a colossal robot, from which players gain access to the power to change the world. "Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more," adds the studio. The gameplay snippets seen in the trailer show the player character climbing giant robots (as expected from the creator), while also controlling these titans somehow as well. This is a fully single-player open-world adventure. “The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game,” says Fumito Ueda, CEO and creative director of genDESIGN. “Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.” Before gaining the name Gen Atlas, Ueda first announced this project back in 2024 with the codename Project Robot. Interestingly, this will be a project being funded and published by Epic Games, which should mean that a Steam release is out of the question. Gen Atlas will be releasing on Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. A release date has not been announced just yet.
    • How backwards can you have it? Yes, Linux was gaining because of Linux handhelds and the push for gaming compatibility, but that's not desktop users, it barely converts anyone who owns a SteamDeck, though it helps for those who wanted to do it, but anyways, the AI+RAM debacle helped Linux because people can't easily upgrade their PCs easily and many hate AI so they'd be incentivized to try Linux.
    • 🤦🏻‍♂️ No, expected because 10 EOL
