jebus197
Hi can anyone point me to a USB-A hub (with a cable going to a USB 3 port) which has USB-C ports actually located on the hub. Every time I try to search for a USB-A to USB-C hub I invariably just get a USB-C hub that can connect to a Macbook or whatever. I don't want to do that. I want to give a computer/laptop that has no USB-C ports at least one or two USB-C ports. But, the thing is the USB-C port can't just be a charging port, it has to support data too. To complicate matters further, I'm located in the UK. 😕
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted May 26, 2020 Moderator Share Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) As for hubs, I don't know if they can do that. But, there is an USB-A to USB-C adapter. For an example: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13507
Ecion
Can you just use a USB-A to USB-C cable, like what you'd get with a mobile phone? Then use that USB-C port for a hub if you need more?
jebus197
Well you see the USB hub will power a USB-C camera (Logitech Brio 4K) and a USB A 80MM fan in a housing. Lets just say a shoebox in my garage (for security purposes). I won't go into details as that's unnecessary here, but it'll be a box with a camera and a fan to keep the camera cool. (As it quickly overheats with the lid closed). Since this needs to be plugged into a normal computer, with about a 2-3 meter extension cable, I'm just pondering how this set up can be made possible? jebus197
OK here's how I think it can be done. Convert the Brio 4K webcam to USB 3.0 via an adaptor: https://amzn.to/36u2H4Q Get a short USB 3.0 cable: https://amzn.to/2yEbgxy Plug this into a standard USB 3 hub: https://amzn.to/2yEbgxy Plug the 80mm fan into the hub too: https://amzn.to/3c3LU9V Run a USB 3.0 extension cable from the hub to the back of the computer: https://amzn.to/2M1JX3i Place all of this in the housing - and I think that should work? Is there a better way though? Having a hub with a usb-C data port and a long USB-3.0 cable to plug straight into the back of a computer would remove all of this complexity. jebus197
I think I do need the adapter? I want to plug both the fan and the camera into the hub and run the hub into the back of a computer via a single USB 3.0 cable. I thought the 3 meter cable might be a bit risky though, but it's surprisingly difficult to find shorter cables on Amazon at the moment. I'm not quite clear where the cable you posted would fit into the scheme of things? But it's too late anyway I guess. I bought all the bits and hopefully it'll all work fine once I put it together. If you just placed the order then Amazon should make it pretty easy to cancel/change but that's up to you in the end. As long as you're happy with the final setup that's what matters 🙂 jebus197 1 Share
jebus197
Yeah I took your advice, cancelled the adapter and just bought the 0.3m version of that cable. One step less as you say. 🙂 Brandon H 1 Share
