Firmware (update) for Kingston SSD?

Recommended Posts

In my Asus ROG notebook is a Kingston NVM Express SSD (KINGSTON RBUSNS8154P3256GJ3 256.0 GB) installed.

The Kingston SSD Manager doesn't recognize this SSD... , so how do I know if there's a firmware update available?

The firmware - according to CrystalDisk info - is E8FK11.T

Is this version the latest? And if not, how do I obtain the most recent one?

There a reason you need the new and greatest firmware? I personally never upgraded the firmware on a NVMe...

Being you do not know if there is a firmware update, why are you asking? There has to be a reason...

Think that Kingston Manager problem may be it's looking on the SATA ports, not the PCI-e. Just my 2 cents.

Besides I'd like to be up to date with software, drivers and potential firmware releases (nomatter what)...... no.

Or should I more be of the school... "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" ;)

firmware upgrades aren't really as important for SSDs as they used to be. You should be fine as you are.

Back when SSDs were a new breed, stability was iffy so firmware updates were needed; but stability/speed have pretty much been perfected in them now; especially m.2 NVMe drives so there's not much need to update firmwares.

Though I disagree with previous comments  (I believe in firmware/BIOS updates) ... I think the problem you have is some OEM Kingston specifically for ASUS (and other OEM partners) which may be why the Kingston manager isn't recognizing it.  In other words, ASUS is probably responsible for delivering firmware updates for the drive (Dell delivers firmware updates for my XPS 15 SK Hynix nvme).

Anyway, according to this...

https://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/ksm-firmware-update

Your drive isn't even listed. Looking at the firmwares it is *probably* some OEM hybrid of the A1000 series (similar firmware naming scheme) ...  E8FK11.R vs your E8FK11. **do not apply that firmware to your drive**

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Have you checked your notebook support page for latest drivers/BIOS and firmware?

Oh I agree, I'm also a believer of keeping BIOS and that up to date. I acknowledge that SSD firmwares aren't as crucial as they used to be though for my reasons stated above.

I did not know about OEMs controlling custom SSD firmwares so that's good to know and is probably what OP is running into. (Y)

Thx for the replies. Asus doesn’t list a firmware update to this SSD on their website, so I guess I should be okay.

But, a new BIOS has been released recently (and now installed on my system 😃). Strange however that Asus update tooling on my system hasn’t found this one yet...

    • Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat are free to claim on the Epic Games Store by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe PC gamers have two more games they can add to their library without needing to open their wallets, as the Epic Games Store's freebie offer has just refreshed. That means last week's Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks and The Ouroboros King offer has been replaced by two new games, which happen to be Robobeat and Citizen Sleeper copies. From the duo, Robobeat lands from developer Simon Fredholm, offering a rhythm-based action game. Released only last year, the title puts you into the shoes of Ace, a bounty hunter that's targeting the robot showman Frazzer. The fast-paced title offers movement techniques like wall-running, sliding, and bunny hopping to zoom around while shooting enemies, but the requirement is doing everything to the beat. Outside of built-in tracks, the title also lets players upload their own music to populate its levels too. Next, Citizen Sleeper lands from Jump Over The Age, a sci-fi RPG adventure taking place in a ruined space station where thousands of people are trying to survive. The tabletop RPG-inspired title uses things like dice and clocks to change how the player approaches situations and survives their day-to-day lives. There is a large range of characters to meet with in the station, each with their own storylines and alliances. "You are a sleeper, a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back," says the developer about the setting. "Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle." The Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat giveaways are set to run until June 25 on the Epic Games Store, giving PC gamers seven days to claim the latest offer. Once this closes out, new freebies will take its place on the same day. They are supposed to be copies of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Voidwrought. Don't forget that mobile gamers can check out the Epic Game Store's weekly giveaways on Android and iOS to grab a freebie there as well.
    • Vivaldi version 8.0.4033.50 released June 17: https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/minor-update-eight-8-0/
    • The Online part hasn't even been announced and probably won't be included on day one. This is a massive singleplayer game.
    • While I agree with all that, it just proves there's an a** built for every seat.
