Margins on iPhones for retailers; zero or negative revenue?!

Not to have a full breakdown of profits, but I was at a local MediaMarkt and they claim that they make no margins/profits on iPhones at all (even a negative revenue).

Also, they state, that on all mobile devices - such as Samsung, Huawei etc - less to none profit is made.

 

I think this is very strange. Especially, since the store space this take (almost one whole floor) is very large. So why - only besides possible returning customers, or revenue from them on other products - would a store even think of selling this kind of devices.

 

Or.... is this MediaMarkt employee just a good liar, to keep his own business 'safe from harm'?

I seem to think that if that was so, they wouldnt sell them. I can only presume they make the margin on the accessories, or other pickups that customers buy when they are in the store.

It is well known that in many places around the world including Nederland, phone shops would advise against Windows Phone because they made more money off selling iOS and Android phones. A phone shop employee told me this when I was thinking about getting the Nokia Lumia 900 (thankfully I did not buy it in the end because it lost support in the first year!)

 

What is true is that shops like MediaMarkt are losing out to online retailers, it probably costs a lot of money to run a brick and mortar store and the online business probably helps pay for it.

 

So for everything less mark up in a real life store, not just phones 😮 

Back in 2008, when I worked at Best Buy, our employee discount was pretty good, basically cost + 5%. Wish it was still like that, would consider getting a part time gig again with them. We got a few bucks knocked off on iPhones, but it was marginal. A few bucks as in less than $10. There aren't really big profits in selling the phones themselves, which is why retailers love to add-on high margin items like cases, cords, chargers, service plans, etc...  

 

They have no problem making low margin on iPhones, because consumers typically by accessories at the same time of purchase. At least ones that go to a store to buy them.

At another (online) webstore there is now a "15% off back to work" promotion.

And I bought a little while an iPhone SE 2020 at MediaMarkt. So I thought.... if I can make use of there return period and can claim this 15% difference (instead of buying an iPhone somewhere else and practically return this phone sealed & unused, get the 100% of this iPhone at MediaMarkt back, and pay that other store the '85%').

 

Or, as it turns out, I have to return the already opened package and used iPhone SE - something to do with serial numbers. Plus, they can deduct some of the original price if there are scratches on "their" iPhone, which for like 99% they will find something. In this case MediaMarkt would make more loss that this 15% difference. However, MediaMarkt is taking this loss as it comes from another "department" with some monety left of second hand selling or something alike. They don't match on price anymore....

 

So, this MediaMarkt employee told me with this information in mind, that they don't make any money from iPhone and other cellphones. Sureeeeeee....

Think about what he stands to GAIN by telling you.

I used to work for a very large telco in Australia and can confirm that iPhones had a few dollars profit in total and we made money on accessories for them. At the time the Galaxy models made a few hundred dollars profit per device so we’d always try sell towards android over iOS

    • Microsoft finally admits its default Windows 11 25H2, 24H2 action broke key legacy component by Sayan Sen Microsoft last week released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. So far the company has acknowledged two known issues that have popped up after the release which include bugged-out Office apps as well as the Recycle Bin; though there could be more at play too. Speaking of bugs and issues, Microsoft seems to have finally acknowledged a problem that probably has been around for close to a year. That's because back in July of 2025 the company made a default change to the latest Windows 11 versions, wherein it switched to JScript9Legacy on Windows 11 24H2 and later releases. Hence following the release of version 25H2 in October 2025, JScript9Legacy also remained default-enabled. As a result there has been a compatibility issue ever since then. For those wondering, by switching to JScript9Legacy Microsoft intended to improve the security of modern Windows PCs by reducing vulnerabilities tied to legacy scripting like cross-site scripting (XSS), among others. XSS exploits can allow cyber-attackers to attach malicious code onto legitimate websites and use them to execute the code when a potential victim loads such a website. Hence the new JScript9Legacy engine enforced stricter execution policies and improved object handling, which should help mitigate such attacks. Microsoft today has published a new support article detailing the problem. Neowin spotted it while browsing. The company says that JScript global definitions and execution context may fail to persist across scripts, potentially breaking older dependent apps and web-based components that relied on this legacy behavior. In the article Microsoft has confirmed that the issue stems from its move away from the older jscript9.dll engine in favor of jscript9legacy.dll. As mentioned above, while the newer engine was designed to address vulnerabilities and strengthen security it also changes how JScript handles execution context. As a result functions and definitions loaded by one script could no longer remain available to subsequent scripts once execution ended. The company notes that some applications worked correctly on earlier Windows versions because the older JScript engine automatically retained global definitions and execution state between scripts. Under the newer model though that behavior is disabled by default causing certain legacy workloads and polyfill-dependent scripts to fail. Microsoft says it addressed the problem via the KB5077241 update though the fix had not been enabled automatically in the following updates. As such admins must explicitly turn on persistent JScript execution context using a Registry setting that the tech giant shared today. The configuration can be applied to individual processes or system-wide through the FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE registry key. The steps have been outlined below: Run the following command to create the feature control registry key: reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE" Under this key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value. Configure the value as follows: To enable persistence for specific processes only: Set the value to 1 for each target process name.
