Can not figure out how to take screenshots in Android 11

Recommended Posts

Prior to 11, all I had to do was long press on the power button, and there was an option for screenshot, but now in 11 that option is gone. According to a few sites that I found I am supposed to be able to press up on the screen and it will give me an option, but that doesn't work for me.

On my S7 with Oreo you can just swipe the side of your hand across the whole screen is that not possible now?

Apparently not, at least not on my pixel

power + volume down for 4 sec

That doesn't work either

that's one of the inconsistencies of Android; the screenshot shortcut seems to be different on every device.

google is usually your friend on this question; I usually just google "how to take a screenshot on [model name]" and the smart result at the top will usually have the answer

Unfortunately that just tells me how to do it before android 11:

How to take a Google Pixel screenshot

Open the screen that you want to capture.

Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time for a few seconds.

Your phone will take a picture of the screen and save it.

At the bottom left, you'll find a preview of your screenshot.

Tip: To take a screenshot without buttons, you can also swipe up and hold from the bottom of the screen and tap Screenshot . Then choose an open app to take a screenshot of.

Obviously neither of those work anymore.

Pixels are holding power button and volume down button at the same time. Works fine on my tester pixel. Somethings wrong with your device if that’s not working.

My device works fine, it's just that this button combo does not work anymore.

If all else fails, you can ask Google Assistant to take a screenshot for you.

Hey Google ... Take Screenshot.

Interesting, but I have Goggle assistant disabled (have no use for it).

Drag up from the bottom of the screen, and the app switcher pops up, with the current window as well.  And below them is an option for screen shot (you can pick which one app you want a screenshot of).

Again, this may have been the case in Android 10, but now that the phone is running 11 that option (at least for me) does not exist.

did a bit of googling and according to this article I found pulling up from the home button is the only method now in base Android 11

Android 11: Screenshots and power

The developers have stripped out the screenshot tool from the power button menu. You can no longer take a screenshot by holding down the power button; instead, you must access the open app list by swiping up from the home button. Once you reveal your open apps, you'll see the Screenshot button at the bottom of the display (Figure B).

The caveat to the new Screenshot feature is that it prevents you from taking screenshots of certain elements such as the Screenshot feature itself or the notification shade.

Updated me Pixel 4XL and rooted few days ago.  Power and vol down works fine for me,  Also, if you being up your open apps list, you can take a screenshot  from there as well.''

Do you have a case on your phone?  If so, remove it and see if you can do a screenshot.  Sometimes cases and interfere with pushing the side buttons correctly.

I can still use the power/vol up buttons on my Pixel 4XL.

all else fails you could try a Factory Reset just to rule out the combo glitching post upgrade.

I believe that the issue is that I am using Microsoft Launcher instead of the default launcher considering my niece is using a Pixel 2 and she can access the screenshot button as outlined in the article that you shared.

Disable it and see if that fixes it for you.

yeah that's possible. Google has been known to block new/adjusted features from 3rd party launchers; especially where the gesture navigation is concerned ...

Using NOVA Launcher and have no issues doing the screenshots with the power/vol buttons.

Pixel 4 XL Android 11 -Power and down work here. At the bottom of the phone you have 3 buttons, Arrow Circle and Square. The one on the far right, the square or go back to last app button, click it and at the bottom left of the screen pops up  "screenshot". Click this and you'll have a screenshot of the last screen open with and option to share or edit.

    • Apple finally brings the slider for Liquid Glass and many other changes by Aditya Tiwari Apple kicked off the official live stream of the WWDC 2026 annual developer event. The company began its latest wave of announcements with changes to the controversial Liquid Glass design language, which debuted last year across Apple's entire software ecosystem. A lot of people didn't like Liquid Glass when it first arrived on iPhone and other devices last year. The devices were plagued with transparency issues and whatnot. While Apple improved things over the year, it has now added a new Liquid Glass slider that lets you switch the transparency from clear to opaque. In other words, you can choose the amount of Liquid Glass you want to see on your iPhone instead of an on/off switch, which would only give you two choices. The sidebars now expand to the edge of the window. When you scroll the UI sideways, the refraction continues beneath the sidebar rather than being cut off at the boundary. Moreover, sidebar icons keep their color. Apple has changed the way Liquid Glass is rendered across the system. There is a separation between different layers, which makes buttons in the toolbar stand out from the background. Apple said it "deeply appreciates" the feedback it received from users and has made adjustments to Liquid Glass. New customizations allow Liquid Glass to improve contrast and enable a more vibrant appearance. The new icons have sharper edges, which addresses an old complaint that iOS 26 icons look blurry at smaller sizes. The upgraded Liquid Glass, Apple said, is building on last year's design upgrades by "integrating additional layers of Liquid Glass directly into the artwork itself." Apple's upgraded design language is available on iOS 27, which is arriving this year with no changes to the list of supported iPhones.
    • FWIW, I've been using Helium on Linux and Windows since the first time it was mentioned here. Actually, maybe a day or 3 before, as I searched for it when I saw it mentioned on the MX Linux forums. Haven't had a single issue on either OS. Not bad for a beta.
    • See up until a few years ago y'all could get away with simply denying your war crimes, pretending it never happened. Unfortunately for you, it's the 2020s and Israel's genocide has been livestreamed in real time. You have to be dumber than a rock to think anyone still believes your propaganda. See the cat is already out of the bag. The world already knows who you are so do yourself a favor and just drop the facade. Bet it gets real tiring keep track of all the lies. Take some inspiration from Israeli ministers who boast on live TV they like massacring civilians. Every zionist accusation is after all a confession.
    • He's just reporting what Microsoft posted. https://msmessagecenter.com/MC1381119 It just means that Windows Defender updates will no longer be bundled into the monthly Cumulative Windows security update and will now be a separate download. They'll still be on Microsoft update of course but now they can be released faster.
    • Apple announces iOS 27 with no changes to the list of supported iPhones by Taras Buria At WWDC 2026 in Cupertino, Apple announced iOS 27, the next mobile operating system for compatible iPhones. The update focuses on tweaking and improving last year's iOS 26, particularly in areas like app launch time, Liquid Glass design, and more. Additionally, Apple has reworked Apple Maps with a significantly enhanced Flyover view for a much more realistic view. Apple also promises better performance, smarter search, new Health features, new parental controls, and more. The most important part is that iOS 27 is compatible with all iPhones that can run iOS 26. That means that even the seven-year-old iPhone 11 can run iOS 27 (supposedly better than iOS 26). iOS 27 will be available this Fall, with the first developer betas expected later today. You can follow the live stream here.
