Win10 - Search is broken, reinstalled, works, reinstalled, broken...

Recommended Posts

I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck's wrong with the explorer's search. When doing a search in explorer for txt files etc.. it closes the whole window, but searching again works thereafter (but slow).

I recently reinstalled because I was setting up a dual boot (also to just give myself a fresh start). Low and behold, search works like a charm. Super fast results, no window closing, ever! But I goofed on something with the dual boot. I used EasyBCD (oops) to get the menu going, bad move... reinstalled both OSs (menu works)... but now Win10 is back to doing that stupid search crash. I'm tempted to reinstall just once more... but if I don't have to, I'd like to find out if there's anything I can do to fix it.

Thanks a mil!!!

Download Everything you will never want to use windows search again!

Also would not hurt to run sfc/scannow from an elevated command line

Had an issue where I could not type anything in the Win10 search box.  Had to open a powershell and use the following command to fix....

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Thanks for the tips. I'll try each.   Here's a log from event viewer if it sheds more light on the issue:

Hello,

Have any tools or scripts been run which disable some of Windows 10's default settings or features?  If so, you might want to revert those changes and see if it makes any difference.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Windows 10 seems to be giving more headaches than anything lately. My PC at home is having issues too. Every time I go on Windows Explorer into the Downloads folder or any other folder it now says: "Waiting...." and it just sits there and does nothing. I restart Explorer and nothing. I had to download Total Commander to be able to backup my files before I re-install Windows again. I don't know what the hell caused it. I don't do porn sites or download illegal software. I use my computer for business-related things. Maybe an update did it? I don't know. I scanned the PC with 3 different antivirus apps and Malwarebytes and its clean so its not a virus.

Any ideas as to what may have caused that?

One of the core libraries (cURL) has been updated to address vulnerabilities and a nasty linker error that was causing the need for a dedicated patch which could now be eliminated.
