Microsoft vs Non Microsoft Applications

Recommended Posts

Wintel:

E-mail Client - Outlook Express 6 (very simple, plain text, rules/filters)

Word Processing - Microsoft Word 2002 (came with laptop)

Web Browser - Internet Explorer 6 (cannot get rid of completely = good/bad?)

MP3 Player - Windows Media Player 9 (update library from internet, compatible with lots of formats)

DVD Player - WinDVD (came with laptop)

Instant Messenger - Trillian (because I use AIM/Yahoo/MSN, lots of skins & plugins)

Damnit, I'm a Microsoft bitch. I have been looking for alternate web browsers and e-mail clients, but I'm a serios minimalist and have found nothing that's just simple and works (hence, I love surfing on my PowerBook with Mail and Safari). Plus, you can't really get rid of IE completely because Windows is integrated with it and I don't like having 2 browsers on here at once. I told you, minimalist... and anal. Should post my Mac apps, too.

Mac:

E-mail Client - Mail (very simple, plain text, rules/filters)

Word Processing - Appleworks (because it's small and made by Apple)

Web Browser - Safari (because it blocks popups, is clean and small, and is made by Apple)

MP3 Player - iTunes (easy to use, nice interface, made by Apple)

DVD Player - Apple DVD Player (made by Apple, see a trend?)

Instant Messenger - iChat (compatible with my AIM buddy list, speaks to me, easy/clean interface, made by Apple)

It's the quality you get that counts not the quantity of the web broswsers you got! :ninja:

I don't think i use any Microsoft prodects except the OS itself and MS Office (nothing can beat that yet).

For the web i use Opera which in my opinion is way better than IE (don't wanna argue about it, but you should try it :)

For MSN and ICQ i use Miranda Instand Messenger (A lot faster than the standard app, which by the way isn't allowed to start ._.)

For mails i use online based.

The current music player is Winamp 5, but wondering if i should switch over to foobar2000 again... time will tell.

DVD app: PowerDVD

Thats it.. :)

Mail Client - Opera M2 Client (fast, smooth, simple)

Word Processing - Microsoft Word XP (its good :D no need to upgrade it)

Web Browser - Opera 7.23 (fast, smooth, simple)

MP3 Player - Winamp 5 (sweet)

DVD Player - PowerDVD (free with comp)

Instant Messenger - None (can't be arsed, I'm old school, I like to use the *shock horror* phone!)

I guess I'm more of a non-M rather then M user.

well, on osx i don't use any ms apps... not even office (i use appleworks bc i am too cheap to buy stuff).

on my pc though:

mail: oe6

browser: ie6

music: itunes

movies: qt (or wmp, if the file is in wmv)

instant messenger: aim with myim

word proc: office 2000 (word, duh?)

Email: Ximian Evolution (I wish I had a Mac to use Mail.app)

Browser: FireFox (I wish I had a Mac to use Safari.)

Music: XMMS (I wish I had a Mac to use iTunes.)

Word Processor: OpenOffice (I wish I had a Mac to use AppleWorks)

IM: aMSN

I just noticed that I dont use any MS apps for everyday tasks :blink: .Cool :woot:

Sending/Receiving e-mails: Thunderbird (but I like Outlook 2003 better)

Web Browsing: Firefox for most, Internet Explorer for some

Playing Mp3s: Winamp 5

Watching Video/DVD: Media Player Classic

Instant Messaging: MSN Messenger

Software Development: Visual C++ 2003 / C#Builder

I do use OpenOffice, but not by choice. I simply can't afford Office 2003 and I don't want to use illegal software.

email: outlook express is small and fast. good app.

burning: xp's built-in burning function sucks. only pcs can read the burnt cds. therefore alcohol 120% or nero.

browser: internet explorer is slow and ugly. no tabs. my dialup likes firefox alot. it's pretty and has tabbed browing.

movies: media player classic. also small and fast and plays all media filetypes available atm.

instant messenger: trillian 0.7x. also free and comes with nice features.

music: winamp 2.9x. itunes mmhm..sometimes...

office: yea, office 2003. i tried openoffice and didn't like it that much.

Sending/Receiving e-mails --> Microsoft Outlook 2003

Web Browsing --> Mozilla Firefox 0.8 & IE6

Playing Mp3s --> Winamp 5.02 & Foobar2000

Watching Video/DVD --> Media Player Classic & PowerDVD 5.0

Instant Messaging --> MSN Messenger 6.0

How come you have a non-microsoft product for Instant Messaging for the PC but you 've got a Microsoft product for the same reason on a MAC??

Trillian isn't compatible with Macintosh? :huh:

No, Trillian is a Windows only application, and the multi-messengers for Mac just aren't on the same level as Trillian. Besides, the Mac version of MSN Messenger lets you turn off the Promotional Pane permanently. (try saying that three times fast)

Here's what everyone should use:

Word Processing: Abiword (win&lin)

Image Editing: GIMP (win&lin)

Browser: firefox (win&lin)

Mail: Ximian Evolution(lin)/Thunderbird(win&lin)

Diagramming: Dia (win&lin)

Spreadsheets: Excel(win) (the one Office component that is truly advanced and IMO worth the price tag) For lesser needs openoffice(win&lin) or gnumeric (lin) will do though

Chat: GAIM or Trillian I guess

Media Player: WinAmp 5(win)/XMMS(lin)

CD Burning: nero(win)/XCDRoast(lin)

E-Mail (send & receive) - Outlook 2003 (SBC Yahoo! & Hotmail)

Browsing - IE w/ MyIE2

Music - QCD Player for MP3/CD & WinAMP5 for internet radio

Video/DVD - Media Player Classic

IM - Trillian (rarely use IMs)

CD Burning - Nero 6/Alcohol 120%

Office - Office 2003

E-mail: Usually Hotmail online, if I need to pull a message off the server, Thunderbird.

Browser: Phoenix\Firebird\Firefox

Music: WinAmp

Video: WinAmp or WMP

IM: MSN Messenger

Graphics Work: GiMP

Office: Office 2000

I mostly ignore what company my software comes from - unless its a real alarm ringer, like Gator or AOL. No real complaints against Microsoft, just that MS Works was the worst piece of crap I've ever encountered, Windows Messenger was stubborn as a pregnant yak and took 4 months to remove, I can't get rid of the OS tooltips, Excel replaces every single "0.1" datapoint with Jan 0, 1936...

Anyway, I choose my software by features, efficiency, and appearance.

    • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
    • The only difference here is that you think you came up with these reasons. You didn't. These age old fearmongering lies (that were NEVER true) were funded by and the anger stoked by Putin through proxies like Farage (and later in the USA, Trump) and filtered down through the skinheads, Neonazis, etc. until it reached the uninformed, ignorant, and gullible -- never realizing they were being played for fools against their own best interests. Even now, despite all of the EVIDENCE proving that Brexit was a terrible mistake for ALL citizens of the UK and that its supporters were tricked by Putin's proxies into sabotaging their own nation, you're still here defending these well-known lies as if they were ever true. Not only are they not true. They NEVER were. So, when are you going to realize that you were lied to and actually get angry at the liars and charlatans who lied to you, instead of blaming the innocent people they lied to you about?
