Mac Mini 2014 SSD upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I bought a mac mini late 2014 model and it came with a mechanical HDD. Boot times are painful and app start ups are horrible. I have ordered the following  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0788D4F1F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  I hope this is the correct one. The other question I have is what M2 SSD does the Late 2014 mac mini support? SATA or NVME?

The adapter says NVME/PCIe on it :D

Make sure your Mac Mini is the model number it refers to.

Don't expect speeds above ~775 reads though, from what I am seeing.

Just making sure that the adapter is correct. Will any M2 SATA SSD work with the machine then?

Not likely, no. Go with NVME. Just don't buy the fastest one you can find, because it will not be able to hit its max speed. Though it will be faster than SATA. If you want SATA, go with a regular 2.5in drive.

The adapter should be fine if your mac mini model matches the one it is for.

So an update, the adapter worked. I used a WD Blue SN550 500GB but had to have high sierra or higher for it to recognise the drive. Mac is running so much quicker, boot times is massive difference.
