Tesla is informing Model 3 customers that the new AMD Ryzen APU in their car is responsible for a slight hit on its range. Customers in Australia have been recently shared a disclosure from the company stating that the new hardware is consuming more power than expected.

Earlier, Tesla was using an Intel Atom A3950 chip on the Model 3 and Model Y. The new AMD Ryzen chip offers a real boost to dashboard performance as it allows apps to open up much faster. Although you now get the ability to play The Witcher 3 right in your Tesla, it comes with a cost of higher battery power consumption and a decrease in range.
As you can see in the tweet, the new Long Autonomy 2022 version has a range of 602 km according to the WLTP cycle which is 22km or 3.5% less than what Tesla had previously announced.
Here are the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y WLTP range adjustments:
- Model 3 RWD (no changes)
- 18" wheels: 510 km (317 miles)
- 19" wheels: 491 km (305 miles)
- Model 3 LR AWD
- 18" wheels: 626 km (389 miles), down by 11 km or 1.7% from 637 km
- 19" wheels: 602 km (374 miles), down by 12 km or 2.0% from 614 km
- Model 3 Performance
- 20" wheels: 547 km (340 miles), down by 20 km or 3.5% from 567 km
The new processor however is not the only reason for the decrease in the range of the Model 3. The combination of CPU, GPU, and a full APU is the actual reason why the while setup draws so much power from the battery.
