Which 5 Video Games blew your mind when you first played them?

The Chaos Engine (Amiga) - I loved the concept, co-op gameplay and art style of this game. I'd never really played anything like it before.

Half-Life (PC) - Right from the introduction it was like wow, almost like I was playing an interactive movie to the younger me at the time.

Pokemon Gold / Silver (GameBoy) - This took everything that was great about the original Red / Blue and expanded upon it. I always loved the collecting / trading aspect, so it was great you could carry your Pokemon forward from the previous games you'd put 100's of hours in to.

Gears of War (Xbox 360) - The graphics looked insane for the time, the chainsaw / weapons like the hammer of dawn were so fun to use. I loved you could co-op the game too.

Pokemon Go (Mobile) - Who ever thought a game could get you out exploring the real world? this is one of the very few games I think truly offers a unique experience on a mobile device. Also great for meeting like minded people in your local area too.

Just reading this list made me think "oh yeah! that was awesome" but in no particular order

  • Max Payne - think this was the first ever game I played end to end and it was a great intro (bullet time, way the story was told and of course that classic Max face)
  • Elder Scrolls - Oblivion - I remember the opening scene where you emerge from the dungeon and see all that green 😍
  • Titanfall 1 and 2 - I absolutely loved the MP and am gutted that it never got a sequel.
  • Bioshock - Hooked on the story from the go.
  • Factorio - I have to stay away from this game because I'm worried about the time that I sink into this when I do play it.

dragon's lair (Arcade) or Space ace - Graphics

Elite(BBC micro) - Best space sim

Unreal Tournement (PC) - First Multi-player I got into. playing on a 56k Flex modem with people from all over the world!!

black and white - one of the best god sims

Crysis - for all the... can this run this, etc

Ahh for me it was:

  • Spear of Destiny (1992)
  • Max Payne (2001) (bullet time)
  • Kingpin: Life of Crime (1999) (for the story)
  • Quake 3 & Unreal Tournament (1999) (for the multiplayer)
  • Quake Champions (2017) (got me back into gaming)
  • Forza series on Xbox (2018-) (pretty fun)

Not a huge gamer..

Great question! For me, the five that really blew my mind were:

GTA: San Andreas – the open world felt endless back then.

Counter Strike 1.6 – first real multiplayer obsession.

Skyrim – the freedom and exploration were insane.

Minecraft – nothing like building your own world from scratch.

What about you, which ones are on your list?

Wow, some blasts from the past in these posts above.... for me anyways...

1. X-COM - Enemy Unknown (original)
2. Diablo 2
3. Need for Speed : Porsche Unleashed
4. Unreal (with a 3DFX Voodoo gfx card... remember those???)
5. Half Life

Quake 2 is the game that got me into online gaming back in 1998-1999 after buying a computer magazine with a floppy disk on the cover explaining how by using GameSpy I could play with real people. So after the first successful connection along with what seemed like smooth gameplay I was hooked for many years and the dialup phone line was permanently connected.

Now days I just play singleplayer games on the PS5 Pro and have no love for online gaming.

Half-Life 2: The Source Engine was so ahead of its time.
Starfox 64: The rumble pack
Counter-Strike 1.3: Not necessarily the game, but the ability to play on LAN against each other and going to computer labs watching and playing in tournaments was incredible.
Portal: Everything about this game was amazing, it was unlike anything else I had played before
Max Payne: Bullet time was so much fun

I've never been a big gamer...

But I remember going from Wolfenstein in 1992 to Doom in 1993.

What a difference in a year!

Going to show my age :D

  • Wing Commander III. This game made me a PC gamer over 30 years ago.
  • Final Fantasy VII (PS1). Still gutted.
  • Pharaoh. Loved the old Impressions games.
  • Might & Magic IV & V: World of Xeen. Two games making a third, mind blown.
  • Anno 1800. Nearly 600hrs, I might have a problem.

Honorable mention. Kings Quest III.

Doom 1 & 2 (PC) - Not only a blast, but started my curiosity for modding
Forza series (XBOX)- Always loved racing games, but the Forza series were a game changer
Diablo (PC) - Still remember the lan parties with the first one and all of the time spent.
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)- While I played all the NES and GB releases prior, VII's story is still tops in the series.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (PC) - Before I switched to UT, The team play and strategy was great.
Final Fantasy XI (PC) - I may be weird for this one, but I could not get into the other MMOs. This game was able to pull me in for years worth of play.

Pole position on Atari 2600, great fun

Shadow of the beast 2  Amiga,  The intro, the graphics, the sound...

Turrican 2  Amiga, The gameplay

Frontier Amiga, Explore wherever and do your own thing

World of Warcraft PC, Still good fun.

I still own the games listed and the hardware to run them. I could certainly list many more Amiga games that impressed me back in the day. It was a transformative time for computers and games. Lots of new ideas.

    • Windows 11 is getting redesigned taskbar settings in new build by Taras Buria Microsoft is rolling out new Windows 11 preview builds in the Insider program, offering users new features and changes to try ahead of public release. In the Experimental channel (formerly Dev), Microsoft is shipping build 26300.8758, while in the Beta channel, users can download build 26220.8754. The changelogs do not contain much, but there is an important update to taskbar settings. Here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Taskbar] Taskbar customization just got easier. As we continue to make improvements to the Taskbar experience mentioned last month, we've introduced a dedicated Taskbar Size setting, making it simpler to find, understand, and personalize your ideal taskbar experience. We've also made refinements to the transitions between taskbar sizes for a smoother overall experience. [File Explorer] We've improved the reliability of thumbnail previews for cloud files in the Details pane. The pane has also been reorganized so file properties are easier to find and review at a glance. Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrative mode. Fixed an issue where the confirmation dialog might display an internal Recycle Bin file name instead of the original file name when permanently deleting a file. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. And here is what is new in build 26220.8754: [Smart card removal policy] Administrators can now configure Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Windows 365 sessions that use Microsoft Entra ID (RDS AAD Auth) authentication to automatically disconnect when a redirected smart card is removed. This extends smart card removal policy enforcement to Microsoft Entra authenticated remote sessions, helping organizations meet security and compliance requirements. [File Explorer] Fixed an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run in administrator mode. [Taskbar] Improved reliability of loading the system tray area of the taskbar. [Sounds] Improved system sounds when using Windows in dark mode. You can find release notes for build 26300.8758 here and for build 26220.8754 here.
