We just grew up with it so it's stuck in our heads. 2 hours of Charles Martinet's Mario voice would get annoying very fast. It's such a shame Bob Hoskins isn't with us anymore... He would have been a natural to do Mario's voice... But Chris Pratt? Totally not the right voice for Mario... It doesn't have to be faux-Italian... But it SHOULD be more... "aged"... If you know what I mean... Gruffer.. More gravelly and at least SOME hint of Bronx/Italian accent...
