Menu bar... on left side... new thing?

Question

Will this be the new thing in software development?

Not having the menu on top, but on the left side of the screen [see new Outlook layout, and also WhatsApp]?

It takes up some valuable space on the left side... though.

What do you guys think?

Instead of taking valuable space on the top? Is your screen that small that you really need 50 pixels more? This kind of menu has been in a lot of Windows apps for around 10 years now. Are you living under a rock?

It's a thing since we use now wide-screen displays and make sense to use extra space from the left or right instead from the top or bottom. The old era of 640x480 and 1024x768 displays are gone.

except in office's case  for outlook that bar that is on the left that now takes up (on my screen) 1440x48 px compared to the old place they had it which took up 48px x 300px when it was at the bottom of the navbar and also is now mostly wasted white space so almost 5x the space with nothing added
