Not having the menu on top, but on the left side of the screen [see new Outlook layout, and also WhatsApp]? It takes up some valuable space on the left side... though. What do you guys think? Instead of taking valuable space on the top? Is your screen that small that you really need 50 pixels more? This kind of menu has been in a lot of Windows apps for around 10 years now.
