Today's educational system.

So they're grading on a curve? That's not new or controversial.

I was fortunate enough to have several teachers that required mastery of the subject, so you had tests, but you also had projects and discussions.

If you were failing the tests but doing well on the projects the teacher would have a 1 on 1 and you had a chance to prove your knowledge with what was essentially a verbal test.

But then again, I went to school before 'no test left behind' was implemented.

You're not wrong, but the act is sometimes still questionable. I remember making an 81 on an algebra final in college and BEING the curve to 100. 19 points, to me at least, is a pretty steep curve. :ermm:

Like all situations, it depends. It might be questionable; it might not be. Without knowing the class, the grading system, the teacher, the schedule or the students, we won't have a good understanding of what's going on and we're all just speculating.

But to start things off with 'unbelievable' is nothing but hyperbolic clickbait.

Personally I feel that kids in school are getting it way too easy. Back in my day, We only had Windows 2000 on our machines, and we didn't need a darn computer to calculate tax we did it manually, research was used in the library. Now technology in some cases has made the education system much worse because even basic mathematical skills are scarce when it comes to the standards of society that kids should be expected to learn and know.

If I remember correctly I only recieved one D  (because I was georgous at the time and the teachers were jealous of my awesomeness, haha nah just kidding) because i slacked off in class and that D was on my final report card. I got As and Bs for the rest of the subject, but for this particular subject I stuffed up the final exam and that was the final result calculated with the ###### grades for the assignments for that particular subject.

Sounds like the school is making kids you know -- be responsible in terms of their own study. Why not? It's about time that schools put these kids on notice.

It's been trending this way for a while now, but clearly it's now incentivizing people to not care.  We already have enough problems with the younger generations not wanting to actually work. Can't wait for the "covid-generation" to join the work force.

When I was in engineering school, anything less than 80% was a fail and the school didn't allow a grading "curve".  All while my friends at the state schools had optional exams, grading curves, and GPA-boosters such as bowling class or underwater basket weaving.
Engineering school sucked, but at least I didn't waste my money on stupid things.

They want to work, they just want the same opportunities the over 60 crowd had when they were starting out.

My Dad made $20k and was able to buy a house. You know what a $20K job should pay now after inflation? $156,000.

Good luck getting a house with a $156k salary today. When he bought his house it was $25 PPSF, it's now $1,142.

So excuse me when I call out the laughably bad joke known as 'nobody wants to work'.

Not sure where you live in Texas but it's rather easy to buy/afford a house if you make $156,000. While there are always exceptions, that salary will get you a house within a reasonable commute in almost every area.  After taxes, that's about 9000/month. If you can't pony up 15-20% of that for a mortgage payment then your personal spending habits are the problem.

He said "should pay", not he was making that.  I was watching a video about homelessness and wherever it was, land was selling for $70/lot in 1927.  The cheapest home there now, 3.2 million.  Pay simply hasn't kept up with inflation, even before this last few years.  And housing prices are freaking ridiculous.

I was comparing my father's salary to what it should be today after inflation. A salary in his field today would be under 80k as it didn’t keep up with inflation.

I was simply caught by your lines - Good luck getting a house with a $156k salary today  and  When he bought his house it was $25 PPSF, it's now $1,142

Once again, we recently sold our home in a very nice upscale area north of Dallas in one of the metroplexes highest rated school districts and the homes run about $210 per sq.ft.  Nowhere near $1142

I understand your comparison to  wages not keeping up with inflation and I'll bang that drum next to you all day long but to state those two lines in the same text is just not really being honest.

Really? I make $66K a year and I am able to afford a house with no problem at all.  I will say that I bought this house in early 2013 when housing prices here in the SE Valley of Arizona were much lower than they are now.  My mortgage APR is 3.375% - extremely low, I know. I pay $800 a month, plus $217 every quarter toward HOA fees.  I'm not sure what state you live in, but if you make $156,000 a year and can't afford a mortgage, something else is wrong.  But maybe it's where you live...

Fair enough.

But honestly his neighborhood is unaffordable in today's economy. Even if he was earning the proper wages after inflation he would not be able to live there.

And no, it's not Texas.

Tempe? No thanks. I'm sure housing is cheaper there, but there's a reason for it. Higher crime, less services, extreme environment means other costs are elevated.

I don't live in Tempe; I live in Queen Creek.  Why do you think you just know? Are you that arrogant and ignorant? I'm assuming by your comment, you once lived in Tempe, or have many friends who live there and tell you all about it.  No place is worse than the whole state of gun-slinging psychos in Texas.  See, it doesn't feel good when people generalize..

Well, you did get Texas right.

I'm just saying that every place has its own share of problems. For example Queen Creek has a higher property crime rate than NYC. But a much lower violent crime rate. It definitely has extreme weather in the summer, I'm sure it's nice other times of the year.

Either way, it's quickly becoming unaffordable. Property costs are rising very quickly, utility costs too.

You could probably ask that first girl anything and everything about the Kardashians And she would ace the test.

It just has to appear real so as to trigger outrage and/or poutrage. That's why this thread was created in the first place.

Never said it was fake, could be real. I just said a lot of people believe it's real.

Could be real, could be fake. No context, no problem! Posted to general discussion.

    • This is a none story - these low volume Chinese models will always get new experimental features first because Apple and Samsung can't produce them in huge volume to meet demand.
    • Nvidia GeForce NOW gains support for Dark Scrolls, Empulse, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The final update of June for Nvidia's cloud gaming service GeForce NOW is now available, and it is touting support for six more games. The company is also drawing subscriber attention towards the summer sales kicking off across stores, so they can stock up on more cloud-supported titles. Of course, the Steam Summer Sale is the biggest promotion, which is kicking off later today. "Supported Steam games can be streamed across devices with GeForce NOW, making it easy to buy a game once, keep progress synced and pick up where the gameplay left off on PCs, Macs, handheld devices, phones, TVs and more," says the company. "In other words, the Steam Summer Sale brings the deals; GeForce NOW adds the flexibility." Don't forget that the GeForce NOW summer sale is still active as well. This limited-time offer drops the 12-month Performance membership from $99.99 to $64.99, saving members $35. At the same time, the 12-month Ultimate membership is currently going for $129.99, dropping the price by $70 from the original $199.99. Here are the games joining GeForce NOW's supported list this week: Dark Scrolls (New release on Steam, available June 22) SAND: Raiders of Sophie (New release on Steam, available June 22) Deer & Boy (New release on Steam, available June 23) EMPULSE (New release on Steam, available June 24) The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales (Steam) FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves (Steam) With the June expansions coming to an end, Nvidia should be announcing its July GeForce NOW plans next week. Keep in mind that, unlike subscription services like Game Pass or EA Play, a copy of a game must be owned by the GeForce NOW member (or at least have a license via PC Game Pass) to start playing via Nvidia's cloud servers. There is also a limit to how many hours subscribers can use the service per month.
