Five Very Popular Distros Now Dead

Recommended Posts

I saw this video just a day ago, and I know all these, and loved them for what they were. Trip down memory lane.

Crunchbang#!

Damn Small Linux (DSL)

Hannah Montana

Ubuntu Satanic Edition

CinnArch/Antergos

There any dead distros that you remember?

So I guess when you said "popular" you were being sarcastic. LOL

Antergos was replaced by EndeavourOS and CrunchBang by BunsenLabs.

Tiny Core Linux is from the original author of Damn Small Linux.

According to Distrowatch, the popularity for this goes as:

Crunchbang#! - Not ranked. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=Crunchbang

Damn Small Linux (DSL) - not ranked. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=damnsmall

Hannah Montana - Doesn't exist in the distrowatch database

Ubuntu Satanic Edition. Can't find it.

CinnArch/Antergos - Not ranked. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=antergos

Not exactly "very popular", according to a reputable source. Most popular are on the right-hand side on the distrowatch homepage.

Thanks for posting this. I love trips down memory lane. However I wish people creating such videos would do more research. There are always lots of "I think" and "I might be wrong about this" in their videos.

not popular in this day and age but in the early 2000's they definitely were (minus the satanic and Hannah versions)

Those are not probably in there because "I think" DistoWatch was made after it was dead..

Distrowatch launched in 2001, Hannah Montana (picked one randomly from the list) was launched in 2009.

I remember Damn Small Linux (DSL) it was ported to the original Xbox as xDSL and ran pretty well with the Xbox's limited 64mb of ram.

You can still download that and a few other Xbox distros from SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/xbox-linux/files/

Unless we are rewriting history, I'm pretty sure Hannah Montana Linux was a meme os of the time.

I remember Neowin's Shift Linux distro also.

Surely....Mandrake?

Man, Mandrake...waaay back when I was little this was going to be my first foray into the world of Linux. Unfortunately I was still too young and lacking the knowledge to figure out how to install it. It's funny now that I'm older and I'm thinking, "but that would have been a piece of cake to do," but at the same time I'm glad I had the common sense not to bother. We only had one computer in the house, and if I had borked that up there would have been no one around to fix it.
