2FA - Always Two Methods to Sign In?

Recommended Posts

I really like password-less sign in methods but just making sure that 2FA is ALWAYS two methods to sign in?

IE: A password and some authenticator app?

It's literally "two factors". It's often:

  1. Something you know (e.g. a password)
  2. Something you have (a thing that produces codes or has a button you can press, etc.)

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong about using a password manager to take away the burden of remembering passwords because those passwords are going through the computer anyway. Also, they can produce and manage entropy that you as a human generally can't do.

To elaborate on what DonC correctly said  it's two factors of authentication.  It COULD be voice and fingerprint, password and confirmation of an authenticator app, a special knock on a door and a codeword.  That's all.
