My uncle was on the ship that pulled into Whitefish Bay before the Fitzgerald would have. I still get chills listening to that song :( 

Also, my mother's favorite singer.

Before she was lost people would line up along the Detroit River shore and watch The Fitz go by. 728 feet long, she was an impressive ship.

My uncle later went on to Captain the Columbia Star and Oglebay Norton. I once went on the Columbia Star when I was a kid for a tour. It was very impressive.

Totally sad. Such a good song writer and singer. Never knew that If You Could Read My Mind was his highest rated song. Thought Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald or Sundown would've been.
