Should I let windows automatically run hdr for games?

Why not try both and see for yourself. In slightly older titles, people often don't like HDR in their games and so they prefer to choose it individually in-game. Certain older games like Witcher 3 can look better. However, more and more newer games are designed with HDR in mind and so these do look better.

Also have you seen AutoHDR intensity slider? https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-all-new-auto-hdr-features-for-game-bar-in-windows-11/
