Will my PC now get drunk with power? (from 1x4 pin to 2x4 pin CPU)

Recommended Posts

You may remember me from the rate my 2023 build thread.

Well I should receive the new build today (will post pics etc once I am up and running) but before I switch to the new build I want to make the old PC worth selling. I managed to find an unused (new) EVGA 750 BQ PSU for sale for only €45 so I ordered it and fitted it today.

One thing I was unaware of (and because near the top of the board is impossible to see properly) I saw that the 550W Be Quiet PSU only has the 1x4 pin connected to the board for my i9-9900K, this would have been fine with the i5-9600K (just about) with its 95W TDP but the i9-9900K has a PL 2 profile of 119W. Lol!

So I have fitted CPU 1 & 2 now

And with PSU fitted.

This is the PC I will be selling:

  • Be quiet! Pure Base 600 ATX (black) with tinted glass and optional metal side panel
  • EVGA 750 BQ, 80+ BRONZE 750W
  • Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI (with Gigabyte TPM Module 2.0)
  • Intel Core i9-9900K
  • Cryorig H7 CPU cooler
  • 64 GB G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaws-V 3200Mhz (4 x 16 GB)
  • KFA2 RTX 2070 SUPER (8 GB DDR6)
  • C:\ Samsung 980 1 TB PCIe 3.0
  • D:\ Intel 660P 1 TB PCIe 3.0
  • E:\ Samsung 870 Qvo 2TB SSD
  • F:\ LG BH10LS38 (CD/DVD/BluRay writer)

Boxes and receipts for all of the above.

A 1x4-pin can run a 9900K as well but the extra juice (if and when the CPU needs it) is always a good thing.

Hello,

It will be fine.  The CPU will only draw the amount of power it needs over the connector.

Mine has this as well.

I tried plugging in both when I first fired up the machine... she had a Ryzen 7 3700X. Wouldn't post.

I tried plugging in both when I fired it up with the 5800X. Wouldn't post.

Seems the board may only post with both if it detects the 5900X/5950X. So... with a 65W or 105W, my board just runs on the 2x4.

Why sell the PC? Use it as a lab machine, learn something that's more than scratching the surface of client operating systems.

+1. Stick some more RAM in it and use it for loads of VirtualBox machines.

when I first saw my newest motherboard had 16 CPU power pins I thought good gawd 🤣 8+8 CPU

That's what I thought it would take back in the day, for the boards hosting the twin AMD FX-74s. If memory serves, both of those 125W? Coughing up at least 250W just for the pair of chips alone.

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?

    • Never used the G7 Pro, but I've never had a good experience with that style of d-pad and fighting games.
    • And I just bought a seat cushion for my mesh chair. The chair feels nice but the first time I sat in it with boxers, I realized I don't like the feel of mesh on my legs. 😂
