When it's job is to run legacy code then it makes sense. New, yet supporting the old stuff. I don't know where the 9 comes into play though, are we 9 versions into this thing already? -

With all the backwards compatibility they lug around even till this day, it is pretty secure unless the user ignores everything and goes crazy. This article is just a example of how supporting something for so long has turned into a issue. Looks like they're working on it now with this change. Still, the best way is to totally cut off support for stuff that's so old but MS just doesn't do it, or when they do it's pretty slow to happen. -
