markwolfe Veteran Posted February 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted February 22, 2004 Detect an unformatted partition? Windows really cannot. It can read filesystems, but an unallocated partition has no filesystem. Now, if you allocate that partition as a primary or extended, then Windows will assign a drive letter to it. You will still not be able to do anything with it until you format it. I think XP will prompt you to do this, but if not, you can probably right-click and select "format". No need to by Partition Magic.
