can i transfer recorded shows to pc, thru crossover cable or anything? besides going inside the box and hacking?

i've heard there are people who instead of using the reciever somehow hook it up to a computer and through a network, hardwire or wireless, transfer files to their desktop computer and do whatever they want with the recorded shows.
